The basis of this thesis is that a film can be used as a mediator for the message of Jesus of Nazareth. As a Christian I hold a Christian worldview. At the core of this world view is the story of Jesus of Nazareth. In watching TITANIC I saw many elements of the Christ story. By analyzing the surface elements of the film(story, plot and character development and the visuals) and then going beyond these surface elements two main themes emerge: salvation and despair. The character of Rose is representative of the lost sheep whose soul is in crisis. Jack is the Jesus figure who, through his relationship with her and his ultimate sacrifice, brings her into a new life. In the beginning of the film Rose lives in a rigid world of societal rules wherein she is expected to behave in a certain way. Jack enters Roses life and encourages her to acknowledge and act out of her ‘true’ identity. In beginning to live out of her true identity Rose experiences an interior awakening wherein she discovers her innate preciousness as a human being. The basis of this thesis is that a film can be used as a mediator for the message of Jesus of Nazareth. As the story progresses the characters come to see that what is truly of value is the preciousness of each human person. This awareness was awakened by the experience of those involved with the wreck of the Titanic, despite the fact that they began their journey in pursuit of material wealth and honor, represented by the blue diamond. My thesis attempts to draw parallels between the search for the blue diamond in the Titanic story and the Christian journey of conversion which demands repentance and personal transformation. Additionally, I look at the sinking of the Titanic as a metaphor for modern society's blind faith in science and technology while suggesting a relationship between God and human nature in terms of Christian eschatology. The aim of this research is to consider human existence and religious faith from a Christian standpoint through the ideas expressed in film. The final goal of this thesis is to aid in the advancement of the message of Jesus Christ through the Gospel while upbuilding the mission of the Church in the world. Ultimately it is my hope that this research will serve to aid in the formulation of a Christian methodology for the study of film that would allow believers to recognize God's providence, and self-revelation, through the medium of the moving image and the stories communicated thereby.
