The purpose of this study is to organize narration structure and phantasm of the novel 『Baridegi』 and examine its literary historic meaning. For precautionary analysis, I organized the concept and character of structure and literary phantasm of 「Bari Princess」, a narrational musical which is the original text of the novel. 『Guest』, 『Shimchung』and 『Baridegi』, which are trilogy of Hwang Suk-young's East Asian narration, are works presenting new narration models by connecting various traditional narrations such as Hwanghaedo 'Jinogui Goot(Death Exorcism)', classic novel 'Shimchung Jun', and narrational musical 'Bari Princess' to modern narrations. They also have the character of positively bringing in phantasm into the novels. This structure flexibly expands the view of the reality that does not reveal the whole aspect by the preexistent realism view. The narrational musical 「Bari Princess」is a Korean classic incessantly re-created into modern art for the past few years, and Hwang Suk-young's 『Baridegi』is one of them. Bari Princess in the narrational musical is a symbol of transcendental character, who lifts up the grief and despair of cursed destiny to all salvation of the world. However, Hwang Suk-young's 『Baridegi』does not end as the complete ending of human salvation. Though it tells of the need to find hope for the mankind through forgiveness and compromise, it ends by showing how it is not so easy in ral life. Phantasm of literature has been existing regardless of the East and the West, from myths, legends, tales and the medieval romance literature and classic literature. In Western Europe academic world, there are many studies of phantasm, such as Todorov's genre approach, Rosemary Jackson's ideological approach, Freud's approach of man's unconsciousness as reality expression, and Kathryn Hume's approach to understand phantasm as the true nature of literature along with mimesis. The process of this study is as follows. Chapter I, introduction, clarifies the reason and purpose of study of Hwang Suk-young's 『Baridegi』. And the contents of method in discussing the subject are presented. Chapter II, precautionary consideration, analyzed the narrational structure of narrational musical 「Bari Prindess」, the source of the novel, and organizes the concept and character of phantasm that functions as analytic frame of the novel. Chapter III. the most important part of this study, examines 『Baridegi』in the order of the narration's chain modality, character and theme, and phantasm operating in the novel. In particular, 'Phantasm operating in 『Baridegi』' is discussed in division of 'phantasm through character' and 'deepening reality cognition due to phantasm', applying the comcept and character of phantasm examined in Chapter II. Chapter IV, literary historical meaning of 『Baridegi』, examines the successful side of the novel along with its limits. A new hpenomenon prominent in the current Korean literature is 'post-national imagination', which focuses on the reality inside and ourside the national boundary. So the novel 『Baridegi』deals with the overall reality of 'Diaspora' seriously. It also deals with ideology and conflict among relition and race. In this point 『Baridegi』shows the potential of world literature. Chapter V, conclusion, summarizes the overall contents of this study and discusses the potential of phantasm that functions as the analytic frame of the novel. And the study is concluded with hope that phantasm is used as useful technique in many studies in the future.
