The welding is an important process that cannot be excluded in the infrastructure industry as it is widely applied to the structures, product manufacturing and repair in the industrial sites. However, those hazardous substances including dusts, toxic gases, high temperature and noises among others trigger problems on the safety and health affecting the human body. Accordingly, this study compared and evaluated two types of the general ventilation systems with respect to the efficient ventilation of pollutants occurring in the welding workshop. The workshop for this study applied the dirivent system to the general ventilation system since 1996, contributing to the protection of health and increase of product quality through controlling pollutants, cooling and heating. Those workshop have recently installed the jet ventilation system to their new welding workshop in order to supplement problems on the existing dirivent system for the cost saving, space utilization, work environment improvements, etc. The greatest problems in the workshop for this study include the increase of cooling and heating expenses as well as the occurrence of complaints from workers for the lower efficiency of ventilation when the workload of welding gets larger because of the lower effects in directing the air currents from nozzles with lower volumes, unlike the designing theories in the dirivent system. This study measured, compared and evaluated the velocity and welding fume, and the concentration and distribution of heavy metals in the welding workshop to evaluate the ventilation efficiency for two types of ventilation systems installed in different welding workshop in the same company. The existing welding workshop with the installation of dirivent system was designed in a steel structure 108m long, 30m wide and 13m high with a volume of 42,120㎥ under 4.5 rounds of ventilation with 192,000 CMM for the ventilation amount. The new welding workshop with the installation of a jet ventilation system was designed in a steel structure 84m long, 33m wide and 15m high with a volume of 41,580㎥ under 4.5 rounds of ventilation with 208,000 CMM for the ventilation amount. For the comparison and evaluation, the area of those workshop was divided in the length (divided into six equal parts for the existing workplace, four equal pats for the new workplace), in the width (divided into three equal parts respectively), and in the height (divided into three parts in 1.5m, 6m and 12m respectively), and its velocity of flows and concentration of pollutants (welding fume and heavy metals) were measured. Persuant to study, the air current in the workshop increased in the average velocity of flow from the average velocity of 0.102m/s in the existing welding workshop to the average velocity of 0.784m/s by 87% (0.682m/s). The concentration of welding fume also occurred. The average concentration in the new welding workshop decreased from 1.050 ㎎∕㎥ to 0.781 ㎎∕㎥ by 25.6 %(0.268 ㎎∕㎥) comparing to that in the existing welding workshop. In addition, the average concentration appeared to have decreased from the entire area. These findings were thought to have resulted from the difference on the average velocity of flow in 87% (0.682 m/s) and the weight of heavy metals in the two welding workshop. In order to compare and evaluate the ventilation efficiency of pollutants depending on the air currents on the tow workshop, the pattern and concentration variations of each heavy metal by height in the welding workshop were analyzed. As a result, the existing welding workshop with 0.102m/s of average velocity showed lower values with the increasing variations in the concentration of heavy metals in height (GL = 1.5 m, GL = 12 m). On the other hand, the new welding workshop with 0.784 m/s under the improved average velocity by 87%(0.682 m/s) showed contrary results either with higher values with the increased height or no difference in the concentration level. These findings were thought to have resulted from differences on the average velocity and weight of metals. We could understand that the velocity of flow and the weight of heavy metal affect the ventilation efficiency through the distribution pattern of heavy metals in the welding workshop from the installations of a dirivent system with an average velocity of 0.102m/s and a jet ventilation system with an average velocity of 0.784m/s. As a result, a dirivent system seems inappropriate for the entire ventilation system in the welding workshop, which makes it difficult to provide the protection for health through controling pollutants and the smooth diffusion of cooling and heating air in the workshop because of its systematic defects failing to form the air currents in the workshop. On the other hand, a jet ventilation system could protect the health of workers by minimizing toxic gases to the breaths of workers while discharging pollutants including heavy metals and welding fumes among others regardless of their concentration or weights, which make it possible to control the air currents over certain velocities systematically in the workshop. In addition, it was thought to be a system to save the maintenance cost with higher efficiency in cooling and heating as it has faster speed in the cooling and heating air in the workshop that a dirivent system. As a result of summarizing the findings, the variations of air currents in the workshop were found to be the largest causes in increasing the ventilation efficiency by increasing the efficiency with respect to pollutants, cooling and heating. Accordingly, the application of a jet ventilation system was thought to have successful evaluations, as it was selected to be an alternative improvement (tentatively) on problems in the dirivent system for the workshop in the study.
