This study conducted long-term hydraulic model experiment on sill-crest, bottom protection and dam-face in the final closure section of Saemangeum sea dike to figure out critical velocity in each stone construction section, which has not been under examination so far
It compared the above materials' critical velocity with each scale's critical velocity calculated from the existing empirical formula, and induced optimal formula to calculate the scale of stone in each construction section.
It also found out the effect of gabion by comparing the critical velocity of manufactured gabion with that of stone as the size and the number of stones collected in the site are limited. In addition, it measured the critical velocity at each mixing ratio of stone and gabion, which has never been measured before.
Based upon the results, this study developed a program to assess optimal scale of stone and gabion in the sea dike construction section, and proposed the stone scales for various velocities and proper mixing ratio of stone and gabion when stone exceeds the critical velocity, using the previously anticipated daily and hourly velocity materials during final closure section construction of Saemangeum Sea Dike.
Also, it proposed the scale of stone for each sea level considering the change of sea level due to the construction. As a result, the wash away phenomenon of stone and gabion was minimized. Therefore, the applicability of this study was highly appreciated after the final closure section of Saemangeum Sea Dike was completed. It is now expected that this study will be utilized in underdeveloped countries which have land reclamation capacity to design the project aimed at resolving shortage of food and securing industrial complex land and water resource.
