This study was conducted with the aim of finding out the relationship between young children's story concept and their writing development.
Under this objective, this study looked into the following questions:
1. What kind of story concepts do children aged 3 to 5 have?
2. In what stages of writing development are these children?
3. What's the relationship between these children's story concepts and levels of writing development?
Subjects in this study were 135 children, 45 each from the 3-, 4- and 5-year-old groups, at a child care home in Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do.
As a research tool to examine the children's story concepts, this study employed the “Story Concept Development Stages” developed by Lee Yong-ja and Park Mi-ra(1992). To test the children on their writing skills, this study used the “Writing Development Stages” which were developed by Lee Yong-ja and Lee Jong-suk(1985) on the basis of those of Gildreth(1936) and Schikedanz(1983), and partially modified by Lee Kyung-hwa(1997).
This study was conducted in the order of preliminary test, training of research assistants, and the main test. First, individual interviews were conducted for the children by using 22 pieces of a drawing in order to test them on their story concepts. The children's linguistic responses revealed through the test were analyzed on the basis of story concept development stages. The writing development test was carried out by letting the children write freely on sheets of paper given them. These writings were collected and given scores in accordance with standard criteria used in writing development tests. The data gathered through these methods were analyzed by using various criteria such as frequency and percentage, one-way analysis of variance, Scheffe post-test, and Pearson correlation analysis.
This study produced the following results:
1. The older the children were, the higher levels of story concepts they displayed. Children aged 4 and 5 were found to be at higher levels than those aged 3. And, children aged 5 were at higher levels than those aged 4.
2. The older the children were, the higher levels of writing development they displayed.
3. It was found that there was a static relationship between story concepts and writing development.
