The purpose of this study was to comparatively examine the novels of Kim Yu-jeong and Lee Sang, focusing on their common motifs in order to establish a new perspective of them. In addition, by analyzing their works of ironic stories to discover out the contributing causes in their lives, the investigator examined how the environmental influences upon each writers was concretely reflected upon their works.
Kim Yu-jeong and Lee Sang were representative novelists in the 1930s. They have been studied respectively, but studies on them together have not been frequently carried out so far. It is because their works appear to have different characteristics. However, their novels have common internal motifs. They present contrasting places and situations focusing on the concepts of 'outside' and 'inside', thus revealing the consensus of unique thought.
These common motifs seem to be derived from their similar life. They were influenced by the extreme poverty caused by the exploitation of imperialist Japan and the confusion of radical modernization in the 1930s. They were born to affluent families, but lost their parents early in life and spent their childhood with the expectation of paternity and the absence of maternity. They suffered from pulmonary tuberculosis in their lives of poverty and died an early death.
Their typical 'outside' is the world of repetitive wandering and suffering. The 'road', a representative space of 'outside', is presented as a place of lost destiny. To them, the 'road' is a place which makes them repetitively wander after losing their substance. They suffer from a lack of money. Novelistic characters in poverty are possessed by the desire for money, but they are ruined by it. Suffering continues repeatedly without exit. They try to overcome it with resignation, endurance, or denial of dominating system. However, they can not escape from the magnetic field of money and therefore live a wanderer's life on the road. As a result, they experience an ironic 'life' in which change and constancy coexist. However, the world of 'inside' is in stark contrast to these desperate situations. In the center of 'inside', there is a 'house' which provides rest and refreshment. However, their novelistic house is a dark and humble place. But it is the only place novelistic characters can go back to from the harsh world. The place looks like a grave but it represents the metaphors of the womb and resurrection. Within this place, they can be protected and take a rest. There is a 'woman' in the house. A woman is another name of a house. She is a partner of life as well as the life itself, thus constituting the haven of peace. However, the house and the woman cannot promise perfect reproduction. Novelistic characters attempt to construct their own world, but come to encounter barriers. At this, they refuse the time in the 'modern time' which only goes forward, and adhere to their own time, thus showing their intention of constructing their own stable world.
As mentioned above, Kim Yu-jeong and Lee Sang have common motifs, but they separate at some point of time and show a contrasting attitude. The manner of change they experience in the 'outside' is different. Kim Yu-jeong describes such an attitude as having homeostasis internally which will not change with the external changes, whereas Lee Sang presents internally changing attitude of which external change is little. As for the woman who plays an important role in the 'inside', Kim Yu-jeong's character is absolutely reliable and idealistic, but Lee Sang's is completely unreliable. Both writers have a common point of searching the method of overcoming by refusing the time in the ‘modern time’, but Kim Yu-jeong chooses 'circulating natural time', whereas Lee Sang chooses 'his own reshuffled time'.
In this study on the novels of Kim Yu-jeong and Lee Sang, the investigator found out a new perspective by focusing on their common motifs. However, the scope of this study was limited, for the investigator exclusively examined only the conception of 'outside' and 'inside'. Therefore, the investigator hopes this limitation will be overcome by future studies.
