Hydrogen has been considered as the one of substitute energy after fossil fuel era. But, occurrence of hydrogen embrittlement could be one of the main obstacles for using structural equipment under hydrogen environment. Therefore, it is required to develop assessment methods of hydrogen embrittlement for the metals used in production, storage, transmission and application utilities of hydrogen. The most probable method of hydrogen mass transmission is using existing natural gas pipeline. Base or weld part of the pipeline can be damaged by mixed gas of hydrogen in the pipeline. In this study small punch (SP) testing was employed to evaluate the hydrogen embrittlement behavior for a line pipe steel (API X65) with electrochemically hydrogen charged specimens. For various hydrogen charging condition of each SP specimens, SP results were analyzed by statistical method between 2-factors(hydrogen charging conditions) at the same time by reduced 2 factor interaction model. For base metal of API X65 steel evaluated in this study, the effect of hydrogen to strength was not significant. It can be negligible regardless of the hydrogen contents in the steel. But, weld metal showed the sensitive mechanical behavior due to hydrogen and SP strength were decreased as the increase of current density and penetration period whereas base metal showed immune to hydrogen charging. Compared to the each microstructure and fractured surfaces, remarkable difference were found. The maximum reduction of SP strength due to hydrogen charging were 7.5 % for base metal compared to as received specimen. But, hydrogen charged weld specimen showed 32 % lower maximum SP strength compared to non-charged specimens for weld metal. These tendency were consistent to the results from other test methods under high pressure hydrogen environment. Cause the hydrogen penetrate from metal surface contacted with electrolyte and specimen, thin specimens are easy to charging hydrogen. Electro-chemical polarization method could be convenient to control the hydrogen concentration at internal specimen and small punch test can evaluate the sensitivity of hydrogen effect of metals. Since the testing procedure and methods for studying hydrogen embrittlement proposed in this study has shown good reproducibility of test results, the proposed method can be assumed to be a reliable test procedure through the experimental results. Furthermore, this methods capable to evaluate the effect of hydrogen for the weld and heat affected zone(HAZ) which are not capable to evaluate by existing mechanical testing method. It can also be anticipated that the SP test is a good candidate test method for hydrogen damage evaluation method.
