Surfactants are widely used in all personal and home care products. Most commercial products contain more than two types of surfactant among four classes (anionic, cationic, nonionic and amphoteric) and because each surfactant has different functions such as cleaning, wetting, foaming, emulsifying, dispersing, softening and antistatic, etc. In order to control quantity and/or quality of numerous law materials and to monitor quantity and/or quality of commercial products properly, development of more rapid and efficient analysis method for the main ingredients is needed. Due to the existence of many alkyl homologues, lack of chromophores, high polarity and thermal instability of surfactants, analysis of complex surfactant mixtures in shampoo, hair conditioner and hair treatment is not easy. A HPLC separation by gradient elution mode which changed the composition of acetonitrile and tetrahydrofuran was applied to get a good resolution with evaporative light scattering detection. In addition, an analytical method to determine the relative ratio of different alkyl chain lengths, the average ethylene oxide (EO) level and EO distribution in the presence of sodium laureth sulfates (SLES) was developed. The results were confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The other chromatograpic analysis conditions for TEA-N-cocylglutamate, fatty alcohol ethoxylate and alkyltrimethylammonium chloride, etc. were studied by using some commercial products. Most elution peaks found in the commercial products were identified by LC-MS and identification of law materials were performed by FAB-MS. Dimethicone (a mixture of polydimethylsiloxane and silicone dioxide) has been used as an important component in various hare care products because of its characteristic viscoelastic properties. Simultaneous analysis of several dimethicone in products by gradient polymer elution chromatography (GPEC) was successfully performed and this technique was compared with size exclusion chromatography (SEC) technique in terms of resolution, retention time and peak intensity. In addition, a successful development of the extraction method for several dimethicone in hair care products was performed and the components of extracts were identified by SEC and NMR. For the characterization of silicones, this GPEC technique can be widely applied. Eight major antiseptics (isothiazolin-ones, parabens, phenoxy ethanol, triclosan, sodium benzoat, benzalkonium chloride) used in hair care products were separated by HPLC/UVD and other ingredients were also separated by HPLC and/or GC. These experiment showed themselves to be more rapid, simple and efficient than any analytical method for analysis of numerous surfactant materials such as active content, alkyl distribution and presence of impurities, etc. They can be usefully applied to analysis various kinds of surfactant mixtures with high accuracy. Finally, The network structures of coacervate with SLES and cationic water soluble polymers were confirmed by cryo-scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The network structures were depend on the charge density and molecular weight of the polymers.
