We have fabricated fluorescing 4-TDCPP/PS nanofibers, TMPyP embedded PVA nanofibers, and TMPyP coated PVA nanofibers with enhanced sensitivity using the electrospinning technique. To improve anti-water solubility of PVA, tetraethyl-orthosilicate (TEOS) has been used as a crosslinking agent for PVA. UV-vis spectroscopy shows a strong Q band and two relatively weak Soret bands from the porphyrin/polymer films and fibers, and reveals that the porphyrins are homogeneously dispersed in the films and fibers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals the effect of solvent and working distance on the morphology of the electro-spun fibers. The fibers from DMF:MEK (1:1) solution have ultra-fine structures with an average diameter of 300 nm. In the case of the fibers from pure DMF and DMF:MEK (1:3) solutions, many beads are formed along the fibers’ length. Variation of the collecting distance from 20 to 30 cm does not induce significant differences in the morphology of the electro-spun PS/4-TDCPP fibers. The morphology of TMPyP/PVA fibers is independent upon the voltage and TCD. The result of FT-IR spectra clearly reveals the fabrication of the PVA-TEOS hybrid. XPS spectra show the good coverage and embedment of porphyrins on and in the nanofibers. Acid-sensing capability of the PS/4-TDCPP fibers, TMPyP embedded, and TMPyP coated PVA fibers are demonstrated by fluorescence microscope.
