Recently advanced high-strength steels(AHSS) with high formability for automotive parts have been developed to meet the demands for passenger safety and weight reduction of a car body. A newly developed AHSS is being looked upon to improve formabilitiy and increase energy absorption as compared to traditional high strength steels(HSS) that have commonly been used in body structures. As a result, a variety of AHSS including dual phase(DP), transformation induced plasticity(TRIP), martensitic(MS) and complex phase steels(CP) widely used in the manufacture of automobiles since the 1980s. Among these high strength steels, TRIP steels are regarded as one of the attractive steels due to their excellent mechanical properties including high strength and ductility. These steels typically have a microstructure consisting of ferrite, bainite and retained austenite. The presence of retained austenite leads to better mechanical properties that can be attributed to its transformation to martensite on straining. To guarantee high formability, the retained austenite should posses optimal stability which enables it to undergo progressive transformation, which in turn lead to a more continuously increasing strain hardening exponent. Because of this excellent formability, TRIP steels can be used to produce more complicated parts than other high strength steels. TRIP steels typically require the use of an isothermal hold at an intermediate temperature, which produces some bainite. The higher Si and C content of TRIP steels also result in larger volume fractions of retained austenite in the final microstructure. TRIP steels use high quantities of carbon to obtain sufficient carbon content for stabilizing the retained austenite phase. Si dissolves in ferrite as a ferrite formation element when polygonal ferrite forms, which raises the chemical potential of carbon in ferrite and enhances carbon diffusion into austenite. when being held at bainite transformation range, austenite could be transformed to baintic ferrite. Si efficiently supresses the formation of cementite because it does not dissolve in cementite, and carbon diffuses into austenite further. The remaining austenite is enriched of carbon in the end. An increase of carbon content in retained austenite due to carbon enrichment results in the decrease of the Ms temperature of austenite. As a results, larger amount of austenite with carbon enrichment survives the final microstructures. TRIP steels are ideal for light weight autobody applications due to their high strength and ductility. However, in order to expand automotive applications galvanizing is essential for corrosion protection. Several kinds of strengthening elements, particularly Si leads to easy surface oxidation of a steel sheets during heat treatment. As a results, galvanizing defects on the steel sheets surface can be formed due to its selective oxidation. In this study, some substitutional elements including Si with various thermodynamic, metallurgical and industrial considerations should be conducted for the development of TRIP GA steels. C content was lowered to 0.1~0.15wt% to improve the weldability and Si content was also lowered to 0.3wt% to enhance the galvanizability. 1.0~2.0wt% Al was added to substitute for Si. Also tramp alloying elements(Cu, Co, Mo, P) were added to improve various characteristics of TRIP GA steels. The effects of continuous annealing conditions and alloying elements on the mechanical properties were investigated. The addition of alloying elements contributed to the mechanical properties of the TRIP steels. The additions of Si, Cu, Mo and P showed the tendency to increase tensile strength while to decrease elongation. It was revealed that Al increased elongation and TS×El, and Co slightly increased tensile strength and TS×El. The elongation of a test specimens were increased with an increase of soaking temperature while the tensile strength was not changed so much under these test condition. With an increase of galvannealing temperature, the volume fraction of retained austenite significantly decreased, resulting in the drastic decrease in elongation. Some alloys satisfying required tensile properties displayed smooth galvannealed surfaces without any bare spots, and Co was shown to have positive effects on galvanizability. 590MPa grade low Si TRIP GA steel sheets having mechanical properties suitable for various autobody application purposes and excellent formability could be successfully achieved.
