Dating is one of the natural phenomena happening to adolescents according to the natural physical and psychological changes. However, society has emphasized negative aspects of dating more than positive ones when looking at adolescents' dating. There is no doubt that dating has many different impacts on adolescents' social relationships, but the previous studies usually covered the actual state of adolescent dating and the connections between dating and sex awareness or attitude and ultimately pursued an educational goal of suggesting some kind of directionality in sex education for adolescents. Thus this study set out to help adolescents do healthy dating, promote the positive functions of dating, and help them have positive influences on adolescents' social relationships. For those purposes, a survey was taken among 365 ninth-grade boys and girls at a middle school in northern Gyeonggi Province. The questionnaire consisted of 31 items for each category including sociodemographic characteristics related to dating, attitude toward dating, dating experience, and adolescents' social relationships with parents, peers, and teachers. Using the SPSS 12.0 program, gathered data were analyzed in frequency, percentage, correlation analysis, analysis of variance, and regression analysis. The research findings led to the following conclusions: First, the subjects scored mean 65.9 points for attitude toward dating with the girls and boys scoring 66.0 and 65.6 points, respectively. The girls turned out to be more open to dating than the boys. Second, as for dating experiences, 57.0% of the subjects had dating experiences with 63.5% and 50.2% of the girls and boys, respectively, having the experiences. The girls turned out to have more dating experiences than the boys. Third, the general characteristics of dating were as follows; the time for the first dating was 'between the fourth to sixth grade'; the number of dating experiences was 'two to three'; the period of dating was 'a month'; the place of dating was 'in the street'; what they did on dating was 'talking'; their parents 'knew' about their dating; there were 'no changes' to their grades; and the most frequent type of physical contact was 'holding hands/folding arms with each other.' When the parents knew about their dating, the period of dating tended to prolong. When they had only the father or mother or no parents at all, the adolescents tended to have more dating experiences. Fourth, their social relationships were examined according to their demographic characteristics. The girls with dating experiences maintained better relationships with their teachers than their male counterparts. The more difficult the family's economic situations were, the worse their relationships were with their parents and peers in addition to the overall social relationships. Fifth, as for social relationships according to gender, the girls maintained better relationships with the teachers than the boys. Sixth, as for social relationships according to the characteristics of dating experiences, the more they dated, the worse their relationships became with the teachers. When the parents knew about their dating, their relationships with the parents and peers turned better. And the more physical contacts they had, the worse their social relationships became. Seventh, the more often they met, the better their relationships with their peers became. Parents' being aware of their adolescent children's dating resulted in statistically significant differences across their social relationships and positive impacts on their overall social relationships. And finally, the more open they were to dating, the better their social relationships became. When they're open to dating, their relationships with parents, peers, and teachers grew better. Based on the analysis results, the following suggestions were made to help adolescents do healthy dating: They need to develop programs about doing healthy dating and educational and support programs to help adolescents increase a sense of control. It's also important to devise plans to help the adolescents from broken families do healthy dating. In follow-up study, they should conduct in-depth research on the impacts of dating experiences on social relationships among the adolescents from broken families. There should be parent education about the characteristics and dating of adolescents, as well. Adolescents need to be instructed to share the right information and stories with their peers. The schools should create conditions for the teachers and adolescents to have natural conversations and counseling sessions about dating. And they need to introduce a social welfare program fit for school environments.
