The purpose of this study was to analyze the contents related to the disabilities in Korean and foreign traditional fairy tales and to provide teaching-learning materials for preschool educators The subjects were 70 books of traditional fairy tales that consist of 41 Korean books and 29 foreign books. Its selected by adding the traditional fairy tales recommended by the teachers in the public and private kindergartens and the day care centers in the Cheongiu Cify and the complete works series of traditional tales recording the best-selling in the Internet bookstores. Analysis of the traits of disabled characters was based on the study authored by Yoo Ahujin, Seo Joohyun, Sung Miyoung and the Welfare Code far the Handicapped (Dec. 5, 2007) and the Promotion Law for Special Education(amended, Dec. 13, 1997). The cognition and attitude for the disabled were based on the negative viewpoints from the six types of 'social attitudes for the DFS(Disability Factor Scale) disabled people developed by Siller and on positive viewpoints applied to the study by Park Namsoo and Kwon Jungsoon (2005). The analysis for the literary elements has a grounding in the study of Lee Sanghyun(1987), Yang Younghee(1984), Kim Kyungsoo(1997). The data were analyzed by frequency(f) and percent(%). The results were as follows: First, the traits of the disabled characters in traditional tales, especially the types of disabilities considered, are composed of the utmost 41.4% of the physically handicapped, 24.3% and 12.1% of the mentally handicapped and emotional disturbances respectively. However, the physically handicapped contents account for 55.1%, mental handicaped 31%, redundant disabilities 6.9%, visual and learning disabilities 3.4%, and there weren't any tales dealing with hearing, linguistic, emotional, and health disorders in foreign tales. The age of the handicapped people shown in Korean tales is comprised of children(19.5%), juveniles(12.1%), adults(9.7%), but the age was unidentified(58.5%) in the most cases. Likewise, the age in foreign tales showed children(24.1%), juveniles(10.3%), adults(10.3%), and unidentified(55.1%). The types of disabled characters in Korean tales were occupied by humans(68.1%), animals(21.9%), others(9.8%) and those in foreign tales were humans(31.7%), animals(17.0%), inanimate beings(2.4%), unidentified(7.3%). In both Korean and foreign tales humans occupied the high proportion. The gender of humans were males(56.0%) and females(12.1%) in Korean tales. The gender in f'oreign tales was males(31.7%) and females(12.1%). The status of the disabled was 80.5% as protagonists and 19.5% as other characters in Korean tales. Heroes were 58.6% and others were 41.4% in foreign tales. Second, as for the cognition and attitude for the disabled in traditional tales, the positive cognition and altitude were observed from 73.2% in Korean tales and 69.0% in foreign tales. This fact indicates that Korean tales show a slightly higher rate than foreign tales in the positive cognition and attitude for disabled characters. Positive viewpoints for the disabled include love(6.8%), appreciation(7.3%), concern(9.8%), overcoming(29.3%), others(2.4%) in Korean tales. Positive viewpoints for the disabled were love(34.5%), overcoming(24.1%), others(10.8%), but no appreciation and concern were cited in foreign tales. As for negative standpoints, Korean tales contained unconditional refusal and tension in touch(7.3%), distorted identification(6.9%), refusal of intimacy(2.4%), inferred emotional disorder(2.4%). Foreign tales included restrictions in other abilities that were not damaged(24.1%), refusal of intimacy(6.9%), but tension in touch, distorted identification, and restrictions in other abilities that were not damaged(24.1%) were not found. Third, as for the analysis of the literary elements in traditional tales, themes in Korean tales were related with problem solving(31,7%), interpersonal relation(29.8%), love(26.8%), didactic elements(22.0%). Other elements dealt with love, lifestyle, self-development, and beauty in nature. Foreign tales dealt with problem solving(31%), interpersonal .elation(17.2%), didactic elements(17%). Others are included under love, lifestile, and self-development. The primary subject matters in traditional tales were taken by real lives(58.5%). Other matters were personification(24.2%), fantasy(12.25%), and fables(4.9%) in Korean tales. In foreign tales fantasy(41.4%) was found at the first place- Real lives(27.6%) and personification(24.1%) were followed. In terms of time setting 40% of Korean tales and 28% of foreign tales had obscure setting instead of definite one. On space setting Korea and foreign tales had 51.2% and 51.7% of daily life, 36.6% and 27.6% of nature, 12.2% and 20.7% of surrealism/others respectively. In view of the results from the analysis for the closing construction, Korean tales had 73.2% of happy ending and 26.8% of tragic ending. Foreign tales had 72.4% of happy ending and 27.6% of tragic ending. Accordingly, happy ending took a larger proportion of ending than tragic ending on the whole. Family structure presented in Korean traditional tales showed 26.8% of a single parent, 7.3% of foster parents, 2.4% of remarriage, and 63.4% of unidentified. In case of' foreign tales tilers were 20.7% of real parents, 3.4% of foster parents, 75.9% of unidentified and others.
