To efficiency of biogas production and reduction of sludge, through the experimental study of two-phase anaerobic digestion and sludge pretreated ozone, we investigated the following aspects: First, we observed the effect of the ozone pretreatment on the sludge dissolution. Second, we studied the reduction of the suspended-solid and organics of the sludge and production of the biogas during the anaerobic digestion process. During the third stage, we added the MLE(Modified Ludzack-Ettinger) treatment after the two-phase anaerobic digestion and investigated the sewage treatment and sludge production. Finally, we checked mass balance of suspended solid and possibility of the sludge volume reduction through the whole process. We conducted the laboratory-scale experiments of the two-phase anaerobic digestion system with the ozone pretreatment, solid-liquid separation to raise the efficiency of the sludge volume reduction and obtained the following results. The pre-treatment with ozone reduced the solid concentration in the average of 8.3% TSS and 9.2% VSS. Of the organic material, TCOD decreased 5.1%, but SCOD showed 72% increase, which was due to destruction of the cell wall and dissolution of cell media by the powerful oxidative stress of ozone. We suggest that the optimum dosage with respect to the component should be sought to increase the reduction of the solid and dissolution of the organics and economics. During the two-phase anaerobic digestion process, we achieved the reduction of 21.5% TSS, 20.2% VSS, 32.1% TCOD, and 22.1% SCOD in average. This result showed a relatively constant and stable reduction efficiency of the concentration. It might be due to the increased number of microorganism and high affinity to the substrate in the two-phase anaerobic digestion process with the sludge recycling. The maximum biogas production were 177.6mL CH4 per g TSS, 45.8mL CO2 per g TSS, 210.8mL CH4 per g VSS, 55.1mL CO2 per g VSS, 127.0mL CH4 per g TCOD, 28.7mL CO2 per g TCOD, 1452.0mL CH4 per g SCOD, and 312.9mL CO2 per g SCOD, respectively. For TCOD, the measured recovery rate of methane was lower by 1/12 than the theoretical value. We suggest the increased amount of organic matter to be supplied to the process to raise the biogas production. The supernatant of the solid-liquid separator was supplied to the MLE sewage treatment as an influent. The efficiency of combined system of two-phase anaerobic digestion and MLE sewage treatment was 85.0% BOD, 91.0% CODcr, 76.7% T-N, 27.1% T-P, 89.9% SS. The treatment efficiency was good even with increased loading. The loading was 7.8mg/L BOD5, 12.7mg/L CODcr, 11.2mg/L T-N, 0.02mg/L T-P, 8.7mg/L SS. Solid material reduction through the two-phase anaerobic digestion and MLE sewage treatment process combined system were 93.8% of TSS and 92.0% of VSS. As a conclusion, experiments with the suggested two-phase anaerobic digestion and MLE process show the possibility of reasonable production of biogas and reduction of the sludge volume and that this process can be a solution to the sludge problems. We recommend further study on various aspect of operating conditions in the sludge pretreatment and anaerobic digestion process to achieve higher efficiency and economics.
