The surface color of gold copper artifacts which are made with copper allow coated with a small amount of gold on the surface vary based on the type of the artifact. Analysis of the plating layer find Ag and Cu in varying levels in addition to Au but experiments and studies on such plating reproduction are insufficient. In this study, the possibility of using plating based on the various ratio of Ag and Cu that are shown in the coating layer analysis and their properties are verified, an in order to identify the different colors based on the artifact, an amalgam plating test was conducted. A compound metal power plating sample made by compounding varying levels of Au, Ag, and Cu as well as powder plating sample by varying the combination of Au粉, Ag粉, Cu粉 were made. In order to identify the difference in the surface color and their properties based on the ratio of Au:Ag:Cu, chromaticity analysis, section examination, and component analysis were conducted. Plating layer chromaticity analysis found that as ratio or Ag and Cu increases in comparison with that of Au, degrees of white, yellow, and red decrease. Comparison of Au+Ag+Cu and Au+Ag plating found that as ratio of Cu increases, red increases and it was found that the surface color of the plating layer is influence more by Cu than it is by Au and Ag. Also, although the chromaticity value of the alloy sample and plating sample are not identical, they display similar appearances which verify that alloy ratio has the greatest effect on the surface color of basic plating layer. Component analysis of Au+Ag plating detected Cu, and this can be explained by the possibility that Cu of base formed amalgam with Hg during mercury undercoat and it diffuse to the surface during the heating process. Results of section examination of Au+Ag+Cu powder verified that unlike Au and Ag, Cu is not able to easily form amalgam with mercury. In addition, it was found that when the ratio of Ag is the same in Au+Ag+Cu plating layer, number of pores increase in the plating layer and condition of the plating deteriorates as ratio of Cu increases. Therefore, when preserving gold copper artifact with red surface color, one must be cautious of the possible peeling of the plating layer.
