This thesis examines whether worked examples enhance learning when they are used as options in a testing system. It is widely accepted that worked examples enhance student performance and learning; however, they have not been studied as options in an assessment setting. A newly developed computerized testing system, called the Constructive Multiple-choice Testing (CMT) system, was used to test whether such learning effect exists. Students can learn more effectively from worked examples than by solving problems by themselves. In the CMT system, examinees are required to answer the same question twice. To prevent the student from solving the problem by guessing, they are required to solve the short-answer portion first, and the multiple-choice portion next. To combine the advantages of the CMT system and the worked examples effect, I used worked examples as the options of the multiple-choice portion of a CMT test. Because students tend to solve problems by eliminating the wrong answer of MC alternatives, It can be hypothesized that in the course of choosing the right example, cognitive load will be fostered, ultimately enhancing the learning effect. To confirm this hypothesis, research was conducted among sixth grade elementary school students. All students had to solve the short answer portion of the CMT test. The students in the experimental group were given worked examples as options in the multiple-choice portion; and those in the comparison group were given final answers to the problem as options. One week later, a posttest was conducted with the parallel item to the treatment test. The results show that in the treatment test, these two groups do not show any difference in the testing time and average score, but in the posttest, the experimental group got a higher average score than the comparison group. Implications and limitations of the research, and directions for future studies were discussed.
