(A) study on the feature of interior space design expression in accord with the incoming light seen in Steven Holl’s architecture원문보기

In regards with form and space of a building, light has great effect upon the human perception and provides humans with invaluable experiences by relating them to a space. Light plays the role not only of linking the reason and sensibility together by its physical and psychological effect, but also of giving artistic vitality to an object by making the perceiver pay attention to the object. A space consists of the being of light, and light in a space is not to be defined as a simple concept but from a synthetic perspective. The synthetic perspective here involves the relations between the artist’s philosophy, light and other formational elements of a space; since light is varyingly expressed according to its context as well as the perceiver’s experiences and its relation with a space can be nterpreted in line with its form, structure, material, and color, the role and its significance of light in the context of space expression should be understood not as being an instrument but with its whole aspect. The subject of this research is a contemporary architect, Steven Hall who had developed the concept and technique of light by applying light in his works. While the effect of light in Steven Hall’s space has been widely recognized, there have been little systemic researches into the characteristics of the light in the space. Thus, the aim of this research is to create a possibility to recognize the significance of the specific notion as well as role of light in Steven Hall’s works by examining his project design and to understand the nature of light as a perceiving element by analyzing the ways in which light inflows into the buildings he designed and in what form light is embodied in the spaces. The outcome of the research is as follows. While there were differences in the ways to create the inflow of light according to buildings and programs, broadly speaking, high side window devised in various forms had been developed and used as a main technique to maximize the amount of the inflow of natural light into each space. Using specular light rather than direct light, he created a movement line of the space and gave light the role of extending the sense of space or of attracting the will to stay in the space. The inflow of light through structures and walls offers the space a sense of volume and creates active space due to its temporal nature. The structures are not just the means to attract light but the element governing the form of an interior, while having the significant role to determine the nature of a space. Side window was considered along with the use of material, and transparent material as well as incoming light help to expand the sense of the interior and exterior. Half-transparent material based side window enables the inflow of light, yet blocks the visible so giving limits to a space while making the effect of expansion of the space through the diffusion of light. While there are cases where only one feature amongst the above features is observed, in most cases, what is observed is an intermingled complex of such features. These features appear in various ways in the spaces, and only where they are embodied in the space in harmony with one another, the peculiar being of the space can be detected. This research has been carried out on the basis of the notions of light developed by Steven Hall and intends to contribute to the further researches into the design of the new notion of light.
