The polarization of the consumer market, which emerged after the Asian financial crisis in the late 1990's, has been gradually getting worse since 2000, segueing into the polarization of personal consumption. That is, a certain individual buys more high-priced or low-priced products. This ambivalent consumption pattern is attributed to the diversification and personalization of the consumption values consumers give to products, and has continued to appear since 2000. Accordingly, enterprises need to study changing consumer behavior to come up with product or marketing strategies suited to consumer needs. Despite the necessity of such a study, however, only a handful of studies on ambivalent consumption have been conducted in the field of clothing and textile: 3 studies on clothing, and one on cosmetics. There is a long way to go both in terms of quantity and topics. When it comes to cosmetics, in particular, brands are not classified according to a consistent set of standards. Also, there are few studies on the relationship between the ambivalent consumption behaviors in clothing and cosmetics, which have similar product characteristics as important means of esthetic expression enabling diversified self-presentation.
Therefore, the following studies are attempted in this paper:
1. Identifying the dimensions of cosmetics consumption values, and segmenting the subjects by cosmetics consumption value;
2. Identifying the differences in cosmetics brand selection between cosmetics consumption value groups, and the differences in ambivalent cosmetics consumption attitude;
3. Identifying the differences in cosmetics brand selection by product type, and how consumers use stores;
4. Identifying the differences in cosmetics brand selection and store selection by age; and
5. Identifying the differences in ambivalent cosmetics consumption attitude by ambivalent clothing consumption attitude.
This study is divided into a theoretical study and an empirical study. In the empirical study questionnaires were used to collect data. The subjects of the study were females aged 20 plus living in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province between January and February 2008, and 427 questionnaires were used for analysis.

This study is divided into a theoretical study and an empirical study. In the empirical study questionnaires were used to collect data. The subjects of the study were females aged 20 plus living in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province between January and February 2008, and 427 questionnaires were used for analysis.
For data analysisSPSS 17.0 statistical program was used, and principal component analysis, factor analysis using Varimaxrotation, Cronbach's αreliability testing, cluster analysis, ANOVA test와 Duncan test, paired t-test와 t-test, frequency analysis and χ2-test were conducted.
The results and conclusions of this study are as follows:
1. The dimensions of cosmetics consumption values were found to be the pleasure value, the fashion value, the function value, the brand ostentation value and the appearance ostentation value, and five types of groups by factor were identified: the group seeking function, the group seeking fashion and brand ostentation, the group seeking pleasure, the group seeking appearance and brand ostentation, and the indifferent group.
2. The differences in cosmetics selection by cosmetics consumption value group were identified. There was a significant difference in three brands: domestic low-and medium-priced skincare products, foreign low-and medium-priced skincare products, and foreign high-priced skincare products. The group seeking function was more prone to select foreign high-priced brands, while the group seeking fashion and brand ostentation and the group seeking appearance and brand ostentation were more likely to foreign brands. The group seeking pleasure was more apt to select foreign low-and medium-priced brands and high-priced high-priced brands as well as domestic low-and medium-priced brands. It can be taken to mean that, as the group seeking pleasure enjoys the act of buying itself, this group buys a variety of products. In particular, this group displays an ambivalent consumption pattern, i.e. purchasing high-priced and low-and medium-priced brands at the same time. Meanwhile, as far as domestic high-priced brands, there was no significant difference among the groups, but the average score was relative high in all five groups. Regardless of the characteristics of the groups, they preferred domestic high-priced brands.
As far as base products are concerned, there was a significant difference in three types of brands, i.e. domestic low-and medium-priced brands, domestic high-priced brands, and foreign low-and medium-priced brands. The group seeking function was more likely than other groups to select domestic high-priced brands, while the group seeking fashion and brand ostentation was more likely than other groups to select domestic high-priced brands and foreign low-and medium priced brands. The group seeking pleasure was also relatively prone to select domestic low-and medium-priced brands and foreign low-and medium-priced brands, whereas the group seeking appearance and brand ostentation was highly likely to select foreign low-and medium-priced brands alone.
When it comes to color cosmetics, there were significant differences in all brands. The group seeking function was more prone than other groups to select foreign low-and medium-priced brands, and relatively highly likely to select domestic high-priced brands as well. The group seeking fashion and brand ostentation was more prone than other groups to select all brand groups except domestic low-and medium priced brands, while the group seeking pleasure was more likely than other groups to select all brand groups except domestic high-priced brands, and the group seeking appearance and brand ostentation was more apt than other groups to select foreign low-and medium priced brands and foreign high-priced brands. In particular, the group seeking pleasure bought foreign high-priced brands, which are the most expensive, and domestic low-and medium-priced brands, which are the least expensive, at the same time, displaying an ambivalent consumption pattern.
