Metal Halides Induced β-phase Formation of Poly(vinylidene fluoride) during Solution Casting, Spin-coating, and Electrospinning and Its Application원문보기

In this study, the effect of varying mass fractions (0 to 20 wt.-%) of calcium chloride (CaCl2) salt on the α- and β-phase content of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) as-cast and ultra-thin films were investigated. FTIR spectral and X-ray diffraction studies revealed the maximum ferroelectric β-phase for the addition of 10~15 wt.% of CaCl2 in PVDF compared to neat PVDF samples. The dense β-phase dominant PVDF-CaCl2 (15 wt.%) thick film (ultra-thin film: 10 wt.%) used as a ferroelectric insulator in one-capacitor(1C) type random access memory device exhibited a remnant polarization of 3.1 mC/cm2 (ultra-thinfilm: 5 mC/cm2), and is a good indication that the unoriented PVDF-CaCl2 films can be used in electronic applications without further stretching process.
PVDF based electrospun nanoweb fibers with outstanding piezo-, pyro-, and ferroelectric behavior are being intensely studied by many researchers, especially for touch-sensor applications. In order to further improve the advantageous characteristics of PVDF nanoweb fibers, we focused our attention on studying the effect of filling PVDF solution with calculated amount of calcium chloride (CaCl2). Changes in β-crystalline phase content and diameter of electrospun nanoweb fibers were analyzed with CaCl2 concentration and electrospinning condition and their associated piezoelectric characteristics were also analyzed using a custom-made sensor set-up developed in our lab. FTIR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to confirm the changes in the β-crystalline content with varying content of CaCl2. SEM data revealed the reducing fiber diameter with increasing CaCl2 content. PVDF nanoweb subjected to pressure showed changes in touch sensing property as analyzed using an oscilloscope integrated with LabVIEW program. Overall, the PVDF nanoweb containing the additives used in our study exhibited greater sensitivity-in-touch for use in smart apparel applications compared to unmodified PVDF nanoweb.
