Steelmaking slag, fly ash and waste cement were typical industrial wastes composed of calcium oxide and silica. From them high-temperature sorbents for carbon dioxide were obtained by extraction with acetic acid and subsequent recrystallization. Acetic acid concentration, and time and temperature of extraction affected the compositions of leachant and raffinate to determine the chemistries and morphologies of the ultimate products from the raw materials. The key of the process, especially, was the extraction rate of silica, which was quite different among the raw materials, to influence the repeated absorbability of carbon dioxide. In case of slag mainly of calcium silicate, substantial amount of silica was initially extracted under high concentration of acetic acid. Silica extracted very slowly turned to gel at low-temperature extraction while it crystallized immediately to form particles at high-temperature extraction. Here, silica gel obtained had high specific surface area with high mesoporosity. The recrystallites from leachant from the former, thus yields low CO2 absorbability due to the silica included, while those obtained from the latter, after filtration of silica particles, showed high absorbability up to 70% of its theoretical value based on CaO. However, the absorbability of the recrystallites obtained from the mixture of leachant and raffinate was substantially low due to the silica well dispersed throughout them. Waste cement, composed of independent calcium oxide and silica, rather than calcium silicate, had quite a different extraction mechanism. Since the silica in waste cement was extracted not as high as that in slag, the recystallites from the extraction mixture formed core(SiO2)-shell(CaO) structures, increasing the absorbability to the theoretical value of CaO included. Since in all the cases the product had more or less silica, reducing the pore plugging of CaO, the initial CO2 absorbability was maintained for the repeated regeneration-carbonation cycles up to 8.
