The modern society is quickly becoming an aging society. With the development of modern scientific technologies, we have seen improvements in medical technologies and living standards. Thus, the extension of average lifespan has increased the number of aged populations and become a big social problem. The rapid increase in senior populations also rapidly increases the number of senior populations with dementia. This leads to an increase in social burdens and causes many social problems. Thus, it is necessary to conduct multifaceted analyses and studies to decide how we should protect and treat senior with dementia. Also, we need space designs for senior facilities to ensure treatment and stability of senior with dementia, improve their quality of life, and reduce burdens and stresses of care-giving families. Studies on senior recuperation facilities have been conducted in relatively diverse areas, but there are not many studies on spatial design for senior with dementia. Senior populations with dementia do not have normal perceptive abilities and can hardly act according to the environment they are in. As they are likely to lose the ability to make judgments, the issue of safety should be considered. In order to provide them with more comfortable and safer spatial environments, it would be necessary to study the improvement of residential environments.
Thus, this study was conducted to analyze the spaces for senior with dementia at municipal recuperation facilities in Seoul and suggest improvement possibilities for those spaces considering the environmental psychological behaviors of senior with dementia.
The following summarizes the findings of this study.
This study evaluated the environments of municipal senior recuperation facilities in Seoul considering the elements of environmental psychological behaviors of senior with dementia to provide basic information for future spatial design improvements for senior recuperation facilities. The following are the conclusions based on the findings of this study:
First, as the facilities examined were large newer recuperation facilities built after 2000, they were relatively favorable considering the 10 items of standards and analysis: pleasance, functional support, safety, accessibility, flexibility of space, social interactivity, autonomy, efficiency of perception and cognition, space layout, and familiarity. However, they could be improved in terms of flexibility of space, safety, and autonomy.
Second, in result of interviewing facility administrators and social workers, the facilities were receiving enough sunlight, but all of them were having ventilation problems because of small windows. Thus, spaces should be designed to create pleasant environments and improve ventilation for emotional stability of senior with dementia.
Third, although safety is important for senior with dementia, all case studies generally showed that the facilities lack consideration of autonomy and spontaneous challenge of senior with dementia. Senior populations with dementia do need a certain level of functional support, but they could lose physical and mental functions if they are too dependent. Thus, spaces should be designed to give stimulation and motivate challenge.
Fourth, the facilities were relatively safe, but there still are sharp edges of furniture, storage, and wheelchair spaces that could be dangerous to senior and not pleasing to the eye. Also, the facilities need more storage areas. Thus, designs with flat surfaces without any projected edges and enough storage spaces should be created to prevent injuries of senior with dementia that lack cognitive and perceptive abilities.
Fifth, activities for senior with dementia are good, but space should be designed to stimulate the five senses of senior - vision, auditory, smell, taste, and touch. In particular, smell and auditory senses should be used to encourage perceptive stimulation, i.e. to realize where they are and to know which season it is, and provide senior with emotional relief.
Sixth, there are separate program rooms or remedy gardens, but they are not widely used. Also, most programs are dependent on recuperation service providers and too formal. Therefore, spaces should be efficiently planned to flexibly accommodate more diversified programs and remedy gardens should be large and accessible for senior to walk around and feel the nature.
Although this study analyzed a limited number of facilities and lacked resources on spaces of senior with dementia, it is expected that future studies could examine more facilities and in-depth environmental psychological behaviors of senior with dementia to derive more reliable findings.
