As the market of juvenile literature has been unprecedentedly booming since the 1990s, juvenile literature has been realized in a variety of ways. On this account, studies on juvenile literature have come to need multilateral methods. Since juvenile literature has been discussed in the historical background of colony and war in general, concerned people have not been reluctant to place the life and activity of writers in front. However, the juvenile literature since the 1990s has changed this composition and thus carried out the so-called evaluation of it. As a result, such activities as scrutinizing the formative course of juvenile literature in a three-dimensional way, examining bibliographies which have been believed blindly, and re-highlighting writers and literary works have been actively carried out for the present. In this study, the investigator examined Korean juvenile literature from the aspect of familial ideology and description by means of a multi-strata text analysis. The investigator regarded the first edition of Bang Jeong-hwan's Children in 1923 as the beginning of Korean juvenile literature and then broadly examined the history of familism appeared in the Korean juvenile literature over the period from 1923 to the 2000s, thus establishing an analytic frame for the study on the types of familial description of representative works. This study was initiated with the question 'Why a family?' had to be the most frequent theme of Korean juvenile literature which had been unprecedentedly booming since the 1990s. The life of children cannot be separated from the problem of family. The investigator thought that this study on Korean juvenile literature's description of children as familial members and the appearance of families in juvenile literature would be an opportunity of highlighting the contemporary viewpoints of children in a new angle and broadening the understanding of juvenile literature. Korean familial ideology has come to have the form of being covered with colonial ideology above the traditional way of thinking due to the suppression of Japanese imperialism. This phenomenon has caused the issue of poverty. With the industrialization after the war society has come to thoroughly base on the logic of capitalism and the barrier between social classes has risen. And the national ideology, which proceeding from individuals to families, societies and nation, has weakened. In order to pursue personal life, families have dismantled or restructured and had to bear the burden of reality. In this regard, this study on the description of family was an attempt for the investigator to examine how the every course of these changes was realized in juvenile literature and what viewpoints of children was contained in juvenile literature. Children, appeared in the juvenile literature over the period from the 1920s to the liberation, was unfortunate. The looks of children placed in the center of various irrational and structural contradictions inflicted in the name of family, such as the evil custom of early marriage―the object of controversy as a representative infringement of children's human right in the Joseon Dynasty―are frequently presented in juvenile literature. Being evaluated as a beautiful fantasticality, Ma Hae-song's Sir Rock and Baby Star is actually a representative work of clearly presenting the ideology of patriarchy via the background of early marriage. Most of children described by KAPF writers who clearly and acutely paying attention to classism were labor providers, in order to recombine or support families which were dismantled with poverty. They cannot but suffer the harsh violence of warped adults, together with providing labor, and must respect adults and behavior politely by following traditional ideology. The inequality and class perceived by classism writers are the subject of dismantlement only in the paternal world outside the family of landlords and tenants and it is solid within the family. In order to submit to the familial class, children must face dangers and trials always. But they must hate no one and overcome the difficulty in silence and have courage and hope, thus becoming objectified. The works of which theme is childlike innocence-oriented subjective figuration of children also has the limitation of internalization of male-oriented childlike innocence for the most part. Some writers describe realistic and healthy maternity in the works before the liberation and pursue the communication with children. But most of works present a hard patriarchal ideology. The viewpoints of children in the juvenile literature before the liberation can be summarized into two in general: (1) children who are working as main agents of economic activity; and (2) children who became mature early and obey parents and sacrifice themselves for families. This trend is essentially far separated from the principle of 'Praise Children' published by Bang Jeong-hwan at that time. Comparing to the works before the liberation, the works after the liberation present the intention of approaching the perspective of children closely. Although it is different by writers, children's playing instinct and adventurous desire which is distinctive from adults in general and their voice that containing not adaptation but opinion begin to be presented in the works at that time. On the other hand, writers' unconscious male-oriented way of thinking and unconditional praise of maternity have not changed greatly, only placing a little more concern in children, comparing to the works before the liberation. The trend of approaching children in the works after the liberation is a desirable phenomenon. However, the purpose and intention were not for children's pleasure and human right but for the writer's pursuit of ideal by mobilizing and objectifying children, thus revealing limitation. Lee Won-su's Forest Land describes a son who must succeed his father's position from a thorough male-oriented perspective and there is no mother appeared. Ma Hae-song's Sand Grain Gogeum is a progressive work which well presents the rejection and resistance of patriarchy and the eldest son-centered familial structure. However, this work pursues an excessively beautified utopia in relation to maternity. It is necessary to review Gang So-cheon for whom negative discussion continues due to the appearance of middle class children, success ideology and instructive attitude. Gang So-cheon's Sunflower Village describes leading character Jeong-hi's war-oriented extremely difficult history of family and presents a positive and dismantling way of thinking for patriarchal ideology, familial egoism and blood relationship. The vice of Korean familial ideology is clearly seen in Gwon Jeong-saeng's Mongsil Sister. However, the writer and reviewers accept this point as a natural thing and only give a big hand with touching feeling to 'sister's self-sacrificing life' which compromising with fate. Rather than praising the life of Mongsil as sublimated one and then forcing child readers to internalize it, it is necessary to grope after the necessity of recovering children's real character and subjectivity. Finally, although Hwang Seon-mi's A Hen outside the Ground is the latest work, the evaluation of it seems to be finished with the problem of maternity and identity. However, Hwang Seon-mi does not stage families but talks about families and goes with the tiring journey of Ipssak even to the point of time when the meaning of love is found out with her pursuit of maternity beyond families, thus raising doubts about the shabby fence of 'families' in reality. By examining Korean juvenile literature from the aspect of familial description, the investigator found out the fact that writers' ultimate stories focused on adult-oriented description and therefore settled down in the objectification of children. This phenomenon is repeated in many other works after the 1990s which were not dealt in this study but denied familial egoism and then groped after the solidarity of family as a new community. On the other side of the works which claiming familism or the dismantlement of families, there are writer's desire to pursue their own ideology by borrowing juvenile literature. In conclusion, by analyzing juvenile literature from the aspect of familial description, the investigator tried to approach the issue of viewpoints of children in a more essential and detailed manner. Since a family is a social entity as well as an extremely personal entity, the examination on the composition of families, the relationship between families and the looks of children in a family via juvenile literature could provide the wisdom to feel writer's view of children as well as Korean juvenile literature's historical view of children. Because this study only adopted a diachronic flow of analysis for short works before the liberation to five long works after the liberation, a variety of studies on familial description must be carried out in the future in diverse ways. The investigator hopes that this study on the familial description-related times, writers and works will provide a new clue for the analysis of the texts of juvenile literature.
