Objective : Complex regional pain syndrome(CRPS) is a challenging neuropathic pain state, quite difficult to comprehend and treat. Its pathophysiological mechanisms are unclear and its treatment is difficult. A qualitative study was performed for the purpose of exploring the experience of a patient with CRPS treated with individualized homeopathic treatment. Methods : Open-ended interviews were used for a 33-year-old woman with CRPS to explore her experiences of illness and homeopathic treatment at baseline, 4, 8, and 12 week. Pain intensity was assessed with the use of a 10-cm horizontal VAS(visual analogue scale)and dosage of analgesics used were checked at baseline, 4, 8 and 12 week. K-BDI(Korean Beck Depression Inventory) was checked before and after treatment. Results: The patient suffered from tremendous pain which made her think about mutilation and suicidal idea. She also suffered from depression, anxiety and irritability which caused troubles in familial and social relationships. The themes of illness expressed were victim, isolation, being trapped and desperation. Those of homeopathic treatment were the ventilation of emotion, communication and the hope of being recovered. She could stop analgesics medication at the third week of homeopathic treatment. VAS at baseline, 4, 8 and 12 weeks were 8, 5, 5, and 5cm respectively. K-BDI at baseline and 12 weeks were 36 and 6 respectively. Conclusion; The patient experienced the illness, as if she was a rat trapped and isolated in desperate situation. Through homeopathic treatment she could experience a feeling of hopefulness as well as a relief of tremendous pain. This encouraging result may suggest that individualized homeopathy could be an alternative treatment for CRPS. Further studies of combined qualitative and quantitative outcome assessment are needed.
