This study aims to investigate the relationship between nongak(農樂, farm folk music) and the military elements such as term, disposition, banners and musical instruments with the historical materials. The term nongak in this study is used as the general term escaping from controversy of ideology caused by historical background. It is not only used for naming dure(farmers' cooperative group)-gut, but also it represents the general peasant culture on the basis of peasant society. In this study, nongak is the concept including elements of religious ceremony(prayer), labor(hard work), military affairs and game(amuse- ment) except mudang-gut. Nongak is performed with various forms such as the village community ritual(Maeul-gut), dure-gut, gullip-gut and pan-gut. Even though, such performances are not separated but they are related in complex. According to the seasonal order(時令) thought, during Joseon(朝鮮) period, general peasants did agricultural activities at the same time preparing for military practices by the institutional frame. On that context, relationship between nongak and the military system of Joseon was represented by general peasants with agricultural activities and military activities. Military class which played the double roles between agriculture and military affairs is an important clue to prove the relationship between nongak and military system. Such classes of citizen farmers are siwi-gun(侍衛軍), youngjin-gun(營鎭軍), sogo-gun(束伍軍) and pyoha- gun(標下軍) in general. Especially nongak is related to military classes in charge of the banner(旗) and chita(吹打) band such as tapyeongso player, nagak player, trumpet player, reed player, banner bearer, drummer, chita band player, seak band player, naechi, etc. Those military classes were nationally scattered in villages independently or being belonged to siwi-gun or youngjin-gun. It is the reason that each village holds banners and instruments they might have used. Accordingly, they were trained for disposition with military standards at the off-season for the farmers, and they could practice the way they were trained as their need at the time of season for farming. Such institutional relationship formed the relationship between nongak and military elements, and the evidences are the term, dispostiion, banners and instruments. The first relationship lies in the terms. Among many different terms in nongak, gungo and geumgo which are related to military banners of ancient army were used for calling nongak in southwestern seaside area. The second relationship lies in the forms and operational principles of the military disposition. circular formation(圓陣), square formation(方陣), water-drop formation, column(縱帶), line(橫帶) and nine-palace eight-trigram formation(九宮八卦陳) in nongak are similar to the circular disposition, square disposition, saban disposition(蛇蟠陣), crane wing disposition(鶴翼陣), jangsa disposition(長蛇陣) and gugunpal disposition(九軍八陣) performed in the military. Military dispositions have operational principles of yangui(兩儀), samjae(三才), palguae(八卦) and gugung(九宮). The symbolic structures which diverge from the Great Absolute(taegeuk, 太極) to yangui and from yangui to samjae are applied to yangui disposition and samjae disposition in military disposition. The same principles are also applied to single or double waterdrop formation, three directional formation and samtongbaegi in nongak. Gugung which is based on nakseo(洛書) is applied to gugunpal disposition in the military and is applied to satongbaegi and five directional formation(五方陳) in nongak. Nakseo(洛書) and mak(陌)․wi(緯) which are the east and west of jungjeon(井田) are related to linear formation in nongak and the crane wing disposition in military disposition. And chun(阡)․gyeong(經) which are the south and north are related to column formation in nongak and jangsa disposition in the military. By that reason, the military dispositions were the foundation of the nongak dispositions. The third relationship lies in the form and function of the banners. The dragon banner(龍旗) of nongak is related to the cross-dragon banner(交龍旗)․yellow dragon banner(黃龍旗)․blue dragon banner(靑龍旗) in military. And ordinance banner(令旗) is related to that of military banner. The dragon image and the letter ‘ordinance 令’ represent strong correlation each other. On function, the ordinance banner was used as signal in the military, but in nongak the same banner was used only for the banner dancing. In the case of the ordinance banner, it was used for military order and code, but in nongak it is used as leading and signal banner. The banners concerning the military signal system was kept remain in nongak as the symbolic system. The fourth relationship lies in the form and function of the instruments. Trumpet in nongak is similar to that of the military concerning the instrumental form and function for announcing particular signals. The big and small gongs in nongak are related to jung(鉦), jang(錚) and geun(金) in military instruments in respect of the form, material, and the way to make a sound with a pole. Military gongs mean prohibition(禁) and retreat(退), and mean also total command of all. This aspect appears in nongak. Players in nongak move according to gong player. The rhythm of first gong-players leads players to calling together and disjointing the formation. Drum in the military and nongak were made of leather and it is a percussion instrument which are played with a pole. Also the way playing drums are common such as playing the center and edge of the drum and playing slow and fast in the same way. In both cases, playing drum was used as the standard of walking steps. Taepyeongso is used as the signal of start and gathering in military system. But it has only function of playing music in nongak. The only instrument, janggu, does not have military background. But since the performers of janggu are seak players or naechi who practiced in the military and civil society at the same time, janggu was considered as a blended instrument of two societies. In conclusion, this research clarified that the instruments of nongak were military instruments before. Military elements such as solders, disposition, banner and instruments during Joseon period are related to farmers, disposition, banner, and instruments of nongak. The organic utility of such compositions is considered as the military activities in troops, but it is considered as amusement in nongak. Therefore, nongak could be regarded as a historical outcome which imitated, curtailed and found amusement from the military activities.
