The contemporary society is taking a path toward the age of image in which a much greater weight is given to outer visual appearance of a person owing mainly to mass multi media. In fact, makeup and hair style, in addition to fashion, exercise a huge effect on the external image of people. Since makeup is used as a means to change the form and image of one's face and highlight one's beauty and character by utilizing an optical illusionary effect of line, color and phase, it has been much required to conduct a study on makeup and hair styles in consideration of individual differences in looks and forms of faces, a base of makeup.
In this paper, a literature survey was performed to collect objective basic data about imaginal perception of the types of make-ups and hair styles that suit particularly to Korean women in an attempt to classify the types of face. For this purpose, models were selected among those who were found to have faces fit to such classification and their faces were measured directly as well as indirectly and by optical judgement, too, to determine their features. In line with such features, seasonal make-ups and 3 kinds of hair styles were done to the models with corresponding faces. Photographs were taken of the models to produce stimulant printouts. In order to investigate imaginal perception about the types of makeup and hair styles from the personal viewpoint and in view of the stimulant printouts, questionnaires were distributed to 50 general people and 20 experts and their replies were put to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and independent as well as paired t-tests for comparison by using SPSS v. 16.0 program.
The results of the investigation showed that the facial types of Korean women could be classified roughly into 4 ~ 7 ones. Most prevalent, above all, are 6 types : oval, round, long, inverted pyramid, square, and diamond shape.
Out of 6 models, the model with an oval face was measured to have 12.7 cm in breadth and 18.4 cm in length of her face with ratio of 1 : 1.45, similar to the typical ratio of 1 : 1.44 for an average Korean beauty. From the optical viewpoint, the oval face proved to have a sleek curve at its bottom. The model with a round type of face was confirmed to have a measurement of 13.9 cm in breadth and 18.6 cm in length, with round hair line on her forehead and short but wide face. The long face model turned out to have a measurement of 13.6 cm and 20.1 cm in breadth and length, respectively, with a narrow ratio between the breadth and the corner of the face that makes it look typically long. The inverted pyramid model of face had a measurement of 14.0 cm and 18.2 cm in breadth and length, respectively, with a ratio of 1 : 1.3, slightly less than 1 : 1.37 of the Korean standardized ratio, with broad brows, narrow chin line and cheekbone placed high on the face. The square face model was measured to be 14.4 cm in breadth and 18.8 cm in length, with a ratio of 1 : 1.32, in a rectangular form with long tuber in jaw and bottom line that makes the lower jaw look thick. The model with a diamond-shaped face had a measurement of 12.7 cm in breadth and 18 cm in length in a ratio of 1 : 1.42, with relatively short forehead compared to the breadth of the face, tapered both ends of the face and projected cheek bone that makes the nose area look as if jutted out.
The 'round' face turned out to be most prevalent among the general people in 20's and experts in 40's. Asked about the frequency of foundational makeup, a great majority of the respondents from both groups replied 'done daily'. 'Eyes, lips and cheeks' were named by the group of general people as parts of color makeup while the group of experts pointed at 'eyes, lips and cheeks' as well as 'eyes and cheeks'. Both groups replied mostly that they do color makeup 'every day' and pointed to 'eyes' as the spot that plays the biggest role in changing one's image. Most respondents named 'TV or newspapers' as the source of tips for their makeup. The general people group revealed that they do makeup because they want 'to become beautiful', whereas, however, the expert group reasoned that they want 'to get confident' through makeup. Both groups regarded make-up as extremely important in transforming one's image with replies 'yes' and 'absolutely yes' by general people and experts, respectively, to the query. The groups of general people and experts turned out to be satisfied with their usual makeup by replying 'good' and 'satisfied' to the question about their grade of satisfaction with makeup. The group of general people was found to believe 'long hair' to be most fit for their face while the expert group considered 'medium-cut hair' to be most fit for them. In consequence, the findings of the survey showed that general people and experts shared similar perception and assessment of makeup although there was a little difference in terms of frequency between both groups.
There was, however, difference between the two groups in their perception about makeup and hair styles to fit best into 6 types of face since the general people group replied to the query questioning the make-ups and hair styles that best suit to the oval face with 'summer makeup - natural' and 'medium-cut hair - comfortable' while the expert group replied with 'spring makeup - womanly' and 'short-cut hair - vivace'. 'Spring makeup - natural or innocent' was almost equally perceived as makeup suitable best to a round face by both general people and experts. With regard to the hair style that seems best fit to a round face, the general people group pointed to 'medium-cut hair - elegant' whereas the expert group responded to with 'short hair - vivace'. The general people group named 'autumn and winter makeup - modern' as the fittest type of makeup for a long face while the expert group named 'summer makeup - modern' as the fittest one, sharing same perception about image. The same perception was also shared by both groups about the image of hair style with 'medium-cut hair - elegant and comfortable'. 'Spring makeup - attractive and womanly' was indicated by both general and expert groups as the fittest makeup for an inverted pyramid type of face. As for hair style, the general people group referred to 'long hair - elegant' as the hair style that is most fit to the inverted pyramid type of face and the expert group found 'medium-cut hair - elegant' as the fittest, sharing the same perception of image. The general people group thought 'autumn makeup - natural' to be the fittest make-up for a square face but the expert group checked 'spring make-up - active' as the fittest. As for the type of hair style, both general and expert groups replied that short hair - vivace, elegant and confident' was the fittest style for a square face. 'Spring makeup, womanly' was perceived by the general group as the makeup that suits best to a diamond-shaped face but 'summer makeup, modern' was recognized by the expert group as such. Both groups named 'medium-cut hair, elegant' as the best hair style. In sum, general people as well as experts shared same view of makeup style that suits to round and inverted pyramid type faces. They also shared same view of hair style for long, square and diamond-shaped faces except for oval face for which there was difference in perception between makeup and hair styles that are most fit to it. Moreover, the general and expert groups demonstrated improved perception of image after application of makeup and hair style.
Since appearance is keenly associated with trend and fashion, such factors as makeup and hair style can not be disregarded at all. Despite the difference in adjective expression and perception between generations, it was noteworthy to observe that the general people and expert groups kept similar imaginal perception of four-season makeup and hair style.
The findings of this study are thought to be most probably utilized as reference for operation and education of makeup and total coordination, since they may be able to serve as fundamental data for makeup and hair style on the basis of measured data about 6 types of faces of Korean women in 20's, their self-perception, preference and makeup and hair styles that suit to faces depending on type.
