Music and movement are two of the oldest communication means. By their instinct, humans associate music with bodily movements and respond to the direction and flow of music by shaking their body up and down to the rhythm of music. Bodily movement is one of the methods of expressing music, and the use of music is essential for introducing the elements of movement. Music and movement can be understood in the same context, and movement is an indispensible instrument in teaching music. When learners listen to various types of music and take interest and participate actively in moving activities, they can understand musical concepts easily and develop movements through music effectively.
For children, music and movement are part of their life, and it is almost instinctive to desire musical and moving activities. If children listen to music, feel specific feelings, and translate them into movements actively, they are expressing what they feel and understand from music and such a movement can be considered a great musical action.
Thus, this study purposed to teach musical concepts to 3rd graders using movements in order to induce them to participate in music learning actively with interest and grow musically. For this study, we reviewed theories on movement and movement based music learning and methods of understanding and approaching musical concepts, and then selected musical concepts to be taught from the 2007 Revised National Curriculum and chose movements to be used, and made a teaching plan.
The specific contents of this study are as follows. First, after understanding movement, movement based music learning theories, and musical concepts, we examined conceptual approaches and the approach to musical concept teaching based on E. Boardman's generative music learning theory. Based on the understanding of movement reviewed as the basis of research, we explored musical concepts in the 2007 Revised National Curriculum and selected musical concepts to be taught to 3rd graders, and then chose movements to be used in the teaching. Selected musical concepts to be taught using basic movements were rhythm, melody, form, tempo, and dynamics. Then, we suggested a concept learning model by applying the stages of concept learning to the generative music learning model so that movement based musical concept teaching is applicable in the field of education, and taught students using the model. Specific teaching learning methods were described in the class model, which dealt with musical concepts, teaching learning strategies, musical activities, and forms of knowledge presentation using thematic music.
This study aimed at helping 3rd graders' musical growth through enriching their musical experiences with movements. The significance of this study is in that it helped students find the meaning of music and internalize it by providing them with sensory experiences fit for their developmental stage.
In music class, the understanding of musical concepts is the basis of all musical activities as it functions as the foundation of all activities expressing music and helps learners in their holistic understanding of musical works. Accordingly, the understanding of musical concepts through movements is expected to promote children's understanding of new concepts, to broaden their understanding of music and, furthermore, to give them a musical eye and personality for enjoying the beauty of music.
