This study aims to survey students' understanding of the proof of the absolute inequality and the problem solving process related with real life, and to analyze the types of errors in order to be helpful to teaching.
For the purpose of this study, the following questions were set up.
1. What percentage of correct answers is shown by items of the algebraic proof of the absolute inequality and what errors are shown in the process of the problem solving?
2. What percentage of correct answers is shown in the items related with real life and those related with the arithmetic, geometric, and harmonic mean using a figure, and what errors are shown in the process of the problem solving?
In order to complete the purpose of this study, 157 first graders in B, M, H, and D highschool were selected as subjects, who were within the top 15% in the Quantitative Section of the two unified achievement tests in the first semester. Among the students in M highschool, 20 students were selected at random for the preliminary inspection. The 157 students have already learned the real number property and the absolute inequality in the first semester. This survey was conducted using and which were developed by the present researcher. And the students who showed typical errors in their answer paper were interviewed individually. The test tools were developed focusing on the algebraic proof of the absolute inequality, the proof of the arithmetic, geometric, and harmonic mean using a figure, and the questions related with real life that students should maximize and minimize using the arithmetic, geometric, and harmonic mean. And these test tools required the students to describe their explanation processes.
After that, the answers by items were analyzed as a percentage. Also, 7 types of errors were set up: ignoring or failing to understand the precondition(E1), not knowing the proof form(E2), making mistakes(E3), omitting(E4), logically invalid inference(E5), lack of algorismic or conceptual knowledge(E6), and the ambiguity of error(E7).
The conclusions are drawn as follows:
First, E2 was shown most and followed by E6, E4, E1, E3, E5, and E7 in order.
Second, in order for students to master the algebraic proof, they should divide a proposition which they have to prove into a supposition and a conclusion, and exercise the form of proof which progresses from the supposition to the conclusion.
Third, it is necessary for teachers to emphasize on the importance of the condition in which equality is achieved in the relation of the arithmetic, geometric, and harmonic mean.
Fourth, teachers should not only emphasize on the algebraic proof of the arithmetic, geometric, and harmonic mean, but also provide students with the origin of the meaning of each mean and examples related with real life in order to help students' conceptual understanding.
Fifth, teachers should utilize a variety of proof methods in class.
This study suggests that teachers can help students with their learning and get a lot of useful information in planning teaching through the analysis of the types of errors appearing in the students' proof processes.
