The purpose of this study was to examine and analyze how fencing players were selected in secondary schools, how they entered school of higher grade, how they were nurtured, how learning guidance was provided to them and how a school budget for fencing clubs was managed. It's basically meant to help improve the operating efficiency of fencing clubs and to foster fencing players in a more effective manner.
To check into the operation of fencing clubs in secondary schools, questionnaires were prepared about three different segments that included the selection of fencing players/admission into school of higher grade, the nurturing of fencing players/learning guidance, and budget management for fencing clubs. The subjects in this study were 80 teachers who were in charge of fencing clubs in middle and high schools. They involved 40 middle school teachers and 40 high school teachers. After a survey was conducted, statistical data on percentage for each of the two groups were obtained, and frequency analysis was implemented.
The conclusions were as follows:
1. Selection and School Entrance of Fencing Players
First, the most common number of fencing players was five or less in the high schools as well as in the middle schools. The majority of fencing players were acknowledged as having a special talent in physical education, and the number of those players was mostly three to four in the middle school and two or less in high school. The greatest obstacle to the selection of players was parents' disapproval, followed by students' unwillingness. It implied that parents who didn't agree to let their children become fencing players made it most difficult to select players.
Second, as for the admission of fencing players into school of higher grade, the largest number of fencing players were admitted into school of higher grade as ones who were skilled in physical education based on their possibilities or prize-winning experience. While most middle school fencing players entered the school of higher grade, the result showed high schoolers had the low rate of getting admission to the college without their prize-winning record.
2. Nurturing fencing Players and Learning Guidance
First, many middle-school fencing players always took every normal lesson, but high-school fencing players received instruction in the morning only in many cases. Even before a competition, some middle-school players took every normal lesson all the time, but most high-school players didn't receive instruction from one or two weeks ago. The most dominant reason fencing players made a poor academic achievement was that they were indifferent to their studies. The teachers offered counsel on managing their academic troubles and overcoming the difficulties in daily physical training ,but they need to give players more advice to improve both their academic achievement and ability as fencing players.
Second, fencing clubs participated in competition seven or eight times a year and players missed classes during the competitions. However, players weren't provided with enough supplementary lesson. In the middle schools, fencing players spent three hours a day on getting exercise, and high-school players spent five hours a day.
Third, as for yearly camp training for fencing clubs, the largest number of the middle school teachers answered there was no camp training, and the largest number of the high school teachers replied it took less than two months to conduct camp training. As for their expectations for school, they asked for more extensive financial aid.
3. Budget Management of fencing Clubs
First, fencing supplies were mostly provided by the schools, and most of the schools hired fencing coaches. The largest number of the schools paid fencing coaches by sharing the expense with local community.
Second, the most dominant membership fee for a player was less than 100 thousand won or nothing. The annual budget earmarked for fencing clubs was less than 10 million won, followed by 10 to 20 million won in the middle schools. In the high schools, the most dominant budget was 10 to less than 20 million won, followed by less than 10 million won. Thus, a budget of 10 million won or more was most widespread.
A school budget accounted for 10 percent or less of the entire budget for fencing clubs in the largest number of the schools. Also, the result of these survey represented less than 30 percent of the overall budget for fencing clubs in the second largest number of the schools, which indicated that it's not easy to secure a sufficient budget.
