The purpose of this study is to determine the extent to which different mediators are able to offset the negative influence of alcoholic parents on the behavior and adaptation of their children to life on a personal level, within the family group, in the school environment. The study is based on the ecosystem model, which investigates the extent to which mediators in the above three areas can assist in determining and influencing behavioral change in the areas of spirituality, personal self-esteem, interaction with parents, especially in terms of affection given and received, and the influence brought to bear from teachers and fellow students. Random sampling and allocated sampling of 340 middle-school students from 1st to 3rd grade were studied, using self-recorded questionnaires. Of the total sample, 307 responses were used to compile the data in this study. To ensure the validity of the hypothesis the Baron Kenny Inspection method (1986) was employed, especially to evaluate the extent of possible regression. As a result of this study, the comparison of non COA’s (Children of Alcoholics) and COA’s suggests that the performance of COA’s at school is relatively lower than non COA’s. In addition, it is apparent that the home economic environment for COA’s is significantly inferior to that of non COA’s. As well as having to deal with the challenging behavior of alcoholic parents, personal relationships for COA’s appear to be more difficult for them to develop, in addition to increased difficulty in adapting to the environment and the challenges at school. Although it seems that spiritual development and emotional attachment to parents, teachers and schoolmates does not materially differ between COA’s and non COA’s, on examination of the hypothesis employed, it is apparent that the individual’s level of response and adaptability to factors such as self-esteem, spirituality, respect for mother and father’s behavior reduces disproportionately with COA’s in comparison with non COA’s. A partial mediator influence confirms the important role played by positive family values, leading to the realization of a more major impact by a full mediator’s influence on the improvement in adjustment of COA’s to their various challenges. Such adjustment is further strengthened and supported by the positive relationships of close friends and the support of teachers in order to offset negative influences that COA’s are exposed to. As a result of this study, the theoretical connotation is reconfirmed in that, among six mediator factors, those of self-esteem, spirituality, attachment to parents and family values play the role of protective factors whereas relationships with friends and teachers are seen more as risk factors than protective factors. Both protective factors and risk factors are dynamic rather than having fixed attributes in a normal eco-system (Rutter 1987). However, when the environment changes then resilience and the ability to cope can be substantially altered. In considering the practical and political connotations of the result of this and similar antecedent studies, it is primarily apparent that self-esteem and spirituality are both seen as inherent resources within the individual which, when strengthened, assist in improving that individual’s ability and competence. In order to develop and sustain a healthy and balanced ego this study suggests that priority should be placed on the positive and supportive influence of friends and teachers, especially where the ego is weak. However, if relationships with friends are made indiscriminately and unconditionally, especially as a result of peer pressure, it can cause negative behavior and may even depress the ego further; a situation from which it is very difficult to recover. Relationships with teachers may create excessive dependence; however, if this attachment proves negative then it is likely to impact adjustment to school life in a negative way. Although demographically this study was based on a local middle-class community, 30% of the sample reported that their parents were alcoholics and confirmed that their adjustment to school life and academic achievement is lower than that of non COA’s. In addition, other risk factors such as the greater economic difficulties that COA’s are subjected to negatively impact their schoolwork. Therefore, the discovery of children at risk because they are COA’s needs to be determined as early as possible and active involvement begun in order that remedial action is taken as soon as possible. As well as finding COA’s atthe earliest possible stage it is important to then target these children to ensure corrective programs together with ongoing supportive involvement. In addition, it is suggested that there be a rapid expansion in alcohol counseling centers to improve the situation for both children and parents. Based on the results of this study it is suggested that further more detailed analysis is appropriate, with specifically defined parameters of investigation.
