A Study on Community Facilities for Senior Citizens : Focused on the Design of Hydrotherapy Space In a Residential Care Facility for Senior Citizens원문보기

Of the total population of our country, the proportion of the population that is more than 65 years old accounts for 10.7%. This percentage has been over 7% since 2000. In addition, it is projected that the amount will reach more than 20% in 2026. At that point we will have reached a super-aged society. This aging phenomenon is actually exerting a great effect on a wide range of areas including politics, economy, society and culture of our country. In a short period of time, complex changes are being created. One of these changes is that people are looking for residential facilities for senior citizens where they can enjoy community programs based on independent life and medical and cultural facilities using their funds. Compared to the past, it was the best policy to comfortably spend the rest of their life being supported by their children. As the generation of the elderly increases those the existing residential facilities for senior citizens are faced with new change. Especially, in the medical area where they hope that the existing facilities for treating diseases and long-term nursing facilities will be transformed into diverse living, culture and health systems at the preventive level rather than medical cure. Besides, as society develops, material affluence and high education standards will make it possible to have more personal desires for various cultural expressions and enjoyment beyond just community. It means that by not separating health and culture, they need various life and health systems, enjoying non-competitive leisure culture and promoting health improvement. Thus, the current study proposes hydrotherapy in as community facilities to meet health promotion and cultural life at the same time. By this, we are to design community facilities of more practical residential space in community facilities for senior citizens which can match with the values of life the current generation of the aged people. In relation to this, the present study was conducted largely by three stages. Finally, we came to design hydrotherapy space for the elderly. First, it summarizes the types and functions of space of the facilities analyzing the current status and types of facilities and residential space for senior citizens. And we deducted necessary elements and established the need of hydrotherapy space to promote health and cultural life at the same time. Second, we examined the types and effects of the hydrotherapy space and investigated its components and characteristics. Third, we examined programs of hydrotherapy used on the basis of home, foreign and domestic spa facilities, resorts, hotels, accompanying spatial features, and investigated spatial programs applicable to residential facilities for senior citizens. In summary, for today’s elderly are able to enjoy their second life beyond age association with diseases. The biggest interest need for complex community facilities to stimulate sports and hobby activity rather than medical facilities for accepted health reason. According to studies, by suggesting hydrotherapy which is being accepted as the current culture and health promotion, we are to plan community facilities for senior citizens. Residential facilities for the elderly are located in cities or near rural areas being connected with large size medical facilities. But hydrotherapy spaces are remotely located from cities so the elderly is limited to use them for the purpose of treatment. If medical treatment to promote health is a purpose, the continuity should be ensured so they should be closely located in real life. Thus, in designing the hydrotherapy space, we are to plan it so that people can intensively use spa programs and design space to which progressive hydrotherapy programs and aesthetic ones mutually and complementarily. We proposed the community facilities for senior citizens hoping these places can be reborn as the facilities to make it possible for them to spend their lives healthily and affluently beyond aging-associated diseases.
