The ability to engineer materials on nanometer length scale has sparked interest across many scientific disciples and has enabled direct investigation into the fundamental size-dependent properties of matter. Of the wide range of nanomaterials currently under investigation, metal@semiconductor composite nanostructures with core-shell morphology have attracted particular attention. Core-shell structure composite nanoparticles with a metallic core and inorganic metal oxide molecular shell have potential applications in the optical information processing and storage, advanced coatings, dye-sensitized solar cells, gas-sensors, and catalysis. Various transition metal oxides such as SiO2, TiO2, and SnO2 have been used as the shell materials, since they offer a range of refractive indices and electronic conductivities and a number of methods have been followed to prepare these core-shell structure nanocomposite particles. Recently, metal@SnO2 core-shell nanoparticles have been investigated as potential candidate for nanocapacitors and optical materials. However, the fundamental question that needs to be addressed is “can we transfer these ultra small core-shell composites from solution phase to solid phase while retaining their size dependent properties”?
There are many fundamental and technical problems which make fabrication of such nanostructures a challenging issue. These difficulties limit the applications of metal@SnO2 nanocomposites. In fact any practical effort towards applying these nanostructures is not yet reported.
In the present thesis, effort was made to explore the simple synthetic routes to obtain well-dispersed metal@SnO2 core-shell structure nanostructures with controlled shape, size, and surface properties. As synthesized materials were characterized by various instrumental techniques. The optical property of the core-shell nanoparticles is investigated by the surface Plasmon spectroscopy (UV-visible spectroscopy). The UV-visible spectroscopy was used to monitor the formation of SnO2 shell on metal nanoparticles. It is also used to investigate the effect of shell thickness and crystallinity on the surface Plasmon band of metal colloid. Phase and structure of the nanocomposites are investigated by X-ray diffraction technique. Elemental analysis was carried out by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Morphology of the core-shell nanocomposites is investigated by electron microscopy (TEM and HRTEM) techniques. The catalytic effect of different metal core on the tin dioxide is investigated by photocatalystic studies. Change in the photocatalytic activity of tin dioxide shell with different metal core has provided information on the activity of metal core on the tin dioxide shell. Finally these materials are investigated for semiconductor gas-sensing applications.
Chapter-1 outlines a general introduction to metal@semiconductor nanocomposites with core-shell morphology and its possible applications. Chapter-2 includes a detailed literature review about tin dioxide and tin dioxide based gas sensors. It also discusses about development of core-shell structured metal@SnO2 nanocomposites and how they can be important in modern technological applications such as semiconductor gas-sensors and photocatalysis.
Chapter-3 explains the experimental techniques those haven been used or developed for the processing of the metal@SnO2 core-shell nanostructures. Metal@SnO2 core-shell structure nanocomposites are prepared by using a soft-chemical precipitation technique at 60OC. The synthesis technique was simple and easy to control. The formation of the core-shell structure was monitored by UV-visible spectroscopy. The drastic shift in the surface Plasmon band of the metallic colloid indicated the formation of tin dioxide shell or metal nanoparticles. Various instrumental techniques such as XRD, TEM, FESEM, XPS etc were used to characterize the materials.
Chapter-4 includes a detailed description of the results and corresponding explanations. For pure Au@SnO2 core-shell nanoparticles, approximate size of the Au nanoparticle is 15∼20 nm and the thickness of the oxide shell is about 5∼10 nm. For Ag@SnO2 core-shell nanocomposites, approximate size of the Ag nanoparticles is 10 nm and the thickness of the tin dioxide shell is about 5 nm. For Pt@SnO2 nanocomposites, near-homogenous precipitation and resultant composite structure of the materials is clearly observed in these images. In the HRTEM images, presence of core-shell type morphology is indicated. However, many Pt nanoparticles are surrounded in single shell. Similarly for Pd@SnO2 nanocomposites distinct core-shell structure is not obtained. Phase and structure of the nanocomposites are investigated by XRD. It suggested the formation of metallic core with face-centered cubic structure characteristics of noble metals. Similarly tin dioxide was found to be in tetragonal Cassiterite form. Au@SnO2 core-shell nanoparticle film was fabricated on glass substrate and its optical propertiy was also investigated. As prepared Au@SnO2, Ag@SnO2 and Pt@SnO2 core-shell structure nanocomposites were successfully applied for the photocatalytic oxidation of acetaldehyde. CO-sensing property of metal@SnO2 core-shell structure nanocoposites is investigated by the home-made gas-sensing evaluation system. Different amount of CO gas (250~1000 ppm) was used to investigate the effect of CO concentration on the sensitivity and similarly effect of heat treatment and operating temperature was also investigated. Our investigations suggest that the Au@SnO2 core-shell structure nanocomposites have approximately 2 and 10 times higher CO-sensitivity than that of pure-SnO2 nanoparticles obtained by same technique at 400 and 250OC. Chapter-5 represents the important findings of the present thesis and also includes suggestions for future study.
