A fox has a “trickery/deceit structure’ among classification of Korean stories. As a sub structure of this structure, the story “Trickster Tale” in which a trickster is introduced can be used. As the definition “one who tricks” can be found in the term “Trickster”, the oldest form of character, it can also be interpreted simply as a “con artist.” However, ‘trickster’ is not a word that can only be interpreted as simply a negative image. A trickster is not a person who deceives but a person who uses tricks for the benefit of his own desires and purpose. But while a trickster is one who ‘deceives’, his personality cannot be simply understood and therefore there are significant differences in views in defining its concept. Stories in which tricksters are introduced can be defined as a trickster tale, and it is a sub concept of “stories of repeated deceit”, an important type of Korean stories, and it belongs in a single character personality centered category.
Until now, studies pertaining to fox stories of “trickery/deceit structure” an aspect of the fox as a ‘trickster’ has been insufficient but examples of their application are expressed in similar narration structure and characters also in the area of cultural contents. On this study, the fox as a trickster which has not been sufficiently addressed will be examined through analysis of types and structure of folk tales and their application in cultural content was observed within the limits of examples of video animations.
First, 118 stories of “An Outline of Korean Oral Literature” were used for analysis of stories of the fox and characters and structure were divided broadly into 12 pieces. When the 12 types were observed 3 belonged to a horizontal relationship classified based on the relationship between the trickster and the counterpart and the remaining belonged to the vertical relationship styles. This shows that the instances in which the fox are not restrained by social structure and rules and practice trickery only for his own desires are relatively rare. Types of vertical relationship were divided into two types and 2 belonged to the type of coveting social status and 4 belonged to excessive greed. There were two pieces that did not belong to these two types but in a hero related group in which the cultural heroic time can be glimpsed with the original image of a trickster which suggests that in the past, the culturally heroic image of the fox could have been portrayed in Korean stories.
Films “Gumiho”, “Gumiho Family”, and “1000 year old fox, Yeoubi” were analyzed to examine examples in which the fox was used and it was found that the image used in stories were also transmitted to films. Also their form and structure are different because although they had the common desire to become human, their method of using trickery and their counterparts were different. Among the three films, the one that most effectively depicted the trickster aspect of the fox was “Gumiho Family” and here, the fox has humorous characteristic like a clown, and it can be seen that the image of the fox has changed in its application to show social caricature as a material used in cultural contents.
When examples of stories and cultural content in which the fox is used that have been analyzed thus far are examined, it can be seen that the fox in Korea also has aspects of a trickster as much as the tiger or the rabbit that used as tricksters of Korea. Based on the characteristics of folk tales, stories that have changed from the past were analyzed and although analysis of this study may be insufficient due to the lack of examples in which the fox is seen and analyzed as a trickster, through this it is hoped that the fox can be placed under the spotlight as a type of trickster of Korea.
