This study aims to find the ethical imperative for the poor in the book of Job. The Old Testament text writes societal and individual responsibility for the poor in an Israelite's community. But Israelites did not observe the laws to take care of the poor. They did not abide by the words of God throughout their history regarding the poor. The Prophets continued to preach about ethical imperative for the poor. But they failed to overcome the gulf between rich and poor in the community. The book of Job described vividly the characters fatherless, widows and wayfarers. The poverty stricken people groaned under tyranny and exploitation. Job's friends didn't understand his situation and they want to expound social problems from retribution theory. Job sighed with circumstances of the poor and he tried to solve proser from lawsuit with God. Job denounced the suffering of innocent people. On the other hand, he proved successful life of wrongdoers, exploiting the poor. In this dissertation, I discussed three realms of the Old Testament about the ethical imperative for the poor in the second chapter . The first is the teaching of Moses for the poor in Exodus , Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Exodus and Leviticus introduced four views. One is social community's liability, two, the administration of justice, three, social welfare and fourth, emancipation of slaves. The book of Deuteronomy depicts religious reformation of king Josiah that includes ethical imperative of community, emancipation of slaves of rules and regulations, religious care for poors, legal protection for poors, social welfare at harvesting season and tax privileges. The second realm covers the message of the prophets about the irrationality of social structure. There are three different parts of the historical background; pre-exile, exile and poet-exile times. Finally, the third realm is the wisdom literature including the Psalm and the Proverbs, They explore a social duty, correction of the misdeeds the issues of ethical imperative for the poor. In the third chapter, the book of Job is the principal subject of this dissertation. Especially, I undertake particular texts that are related to imperative messages for the poor. Job's friends adheres retribution theory. But Job deals with the actual situations of the afflicted. Therefore, I raise guesting about their discussing about the help for the outcast. Also, Job's reply to the same issues undergoes my examination. And I explicates Elihu's traditional theology about the poor. Job experiences misunderstanding of the friends due to their lack of sufferings. But in the end, God demonstrate his innocence and responds his appeal. In the fourth chapter, I tries a theological discovery about ethical imperative for the poor from the texts. The theological findings of the ethical imperative for the poor give a proper message to today's Christian. This dissertation finds God's love for the weak and us with ethical order that we must practice the love for neighbors. In conclusion, This dissertation summarizes previous discussions and prospects further problems which regard to the issues of the poor.
