Generally, when injection molding is in progress, pressure arises inside the cavity and in the packing process a very huge pressure applies to molding products. On the other hand, injection compression molding (ICM) is a process where mold is not completely closed, leaving a certain degree of gap, followed by injection and then compression to make and extract final molding products. Therefore, this molding process does not involve high pressure and relieves the pressure at the gate, keeping overall density of products even and reducing birefringence which results in better optical properties. Characteristics of ICM process and quality of molded products have been investigated in this study. The products observed here played the same role as lens, so the quality meeting the optically required properties needs considering first and foremost. Therefore, to meet the optical properties required, not injection molding but the ICM process was applied and the results were analyzed. Through the observation of birefringence of ICM products, the residual stress was measured to examine product quality and find out appropriate injection compression process conditions, while the CAE analysis method for the ICM was built. The model used for the experiment and analysis was a hemispherical transparent product molded by one cavity mold, and was made from polycarbonate (PC). This study observed and analyzed the molding quality depending on the molding conditions of the ICM process including the compression gap and the grades of resin. Regarding the compression gap, when the gap was small, the residual stress generated was low, resulting in products with high optical quality gained, while the bigger the gap was, the higher the residual stress got. There was no significant difference depending on the grades of resin. In addition, in terms of the results depending on molding conditions, the higher the resin temperature was, the further the residual stress increased, and the higher the compression speed and compressive force became, the more the residual stress increased. To predict the quality of molding products in ICM, the CAE analysis method was implemented and the analytical results were compared with experimental results.
