The inkjet printing technology is nowadays an important issue to make conductive patterns in electronic package because it can replace the traditional processes of lithography, deposition and etching. The ink suspended by silver nanoparticles can support high conductivity lines when it is used for piezoelectric inkjet printing technology. However, it is very difficult to control droplet precisely since there is no inkjet nozzle to match all kinds of inks. So much design parameters are related to the droplet formation such as operating conditions and fluid properties as well as nozzle shape. One often experiences that the silver nanoparticle suspension is dispensed not in the form of a single drop but in the form of several satellites due to its low viscosity when the piezoelectric inkjet nozzle is driven by single waveform. Thus, the objective of the present study is to investigate how the droplet formation can be controlled by changing the waveform and the temperature to drive a piezoelectric inkjet nozzle. This paper presents the map of droplet formation in a piezoelectric inkjet nozzle under various operating conditions. Double waveform as well as conventional single waveform is tested for the droplet formation. In the double waveform, voltage, pulse width and time separation between two pulses are key parameters. A mixture of distilled water and ethylene glycol is used as an operating fluid. In the present study, double waveforms to drive a piezoelectric inkjet nozzle have been applied to the droplet formation of low viscosity liquid. The effect of the driving voltage and time separation between the pulses was observed. Even though several satellites are produced in the single waveform, the droplet formation could be precisely controlled in the double waveform. The shorter is the time separation, the smaller droplet is formed. The main effect of double waveform is that the second pulse reduces the mass and momentum of the ejected liquid.
