This study was carried out from March to October 2009 to find out the relationship between soil seed bank and actual vegetation for 3 plots each for the communities of Pinus densiflora and Quercus mongolica, and the results are summarized in the follows. The vegetation changes for the communities were predicted based on the analyses of actual vegetation and community structures. The soil seed bank of the two communities were selected at four sites within the communities and collected soil samples with 60 x 70cm size polyethylene bag and transported to the Green House, Department of Landscape Architecture, Yeungnam University. The soil samples were deployed into 24 styrofoam boxes which each size of box is 50cm×33cm×12cm size. The germination status was counted after seed germination. Based on the Importance Value(IV) and the DBH Classes Distribution (DCD) in the studied plots, the Community of Pinus densiflora will change to Quercus community in the future. Based on the monitoring to the soil seed banking, the seeds of Pinus densiflora were germinated in 3 soil seed banks and both Quercus acutissima and Q. serrata were also germinated. This trend is relatively similar to the actual vegetation. From the monitoring to the Quercus mongolica Community I, the three seedlings of Rhododendron mucronulatum, two seedlings both of Quercus acutissima and Prunus sargentii were recorded, but no seedlings of Quercus mongolica was seen in the soil seed bank. Based on the Importance Value (IV) and the DBH Classes Distribution (DCD) in the studied plots showed the Community II of Quercus mongolica will maintain Quercus mongolica as a dominant species, but competition with Carpinus laxiflora is expected. Two seedlings for Morus bombycis, three seedlings for Weigela sunsessilis and one seedling of Rhus trichocarpa were recorded, but no seedlings of Quercus mongolica was recorded. Based on the Importance Value (IV) and the DBH Classes Distribution (DCD) in the studied plots showed the Community III of Quercus mongolica will maintain, but competition with Carpinus laxiflora is expected. Eight seedlings of Tripterygium regelii was recorded, but no seedlings of woody species including Quercus mongolica was recorded. With compare to the previous studies on vegetation changes in Korea, this study deals the introduction of the conception of soil seed bank to the habitat recovery works. Based on the soil seed banking, Pinus densiflora Communities showed the more similar to the actual vegetation than Quercus mongolica Community. The introduction of soil seed banking will be useful tool to the habitat creation and habitat recovery works.
