In continuous Galvanizing lines, the immersed bath hardware (e.g. bearings, sink, stabilizer, and corrector rolls, and also support roll arms and snout tip) is subjected to corrosion and wear failure. In order to develop protective coatings for bath hardware used in continuous hot-dip galvanizing, the overlay Iron base superalloy coating was formed on 316L stainless steel by the Plasma Transfer Arc (PTA) Welding. Additionally specimen made by casting process also studied. Microstructure of the PTA Weld and Casting specimens characterized using SEM/EDS and XRD analysis. Immersion test was performed to study the reaction between these materials with molten Zn alloy. The immersion test was done for 4, 8, 12, 24 and 50 hours at 600 0C to examine the reaction layer formed at the surface of the material. The hardness of the PTA welds specimens, cast specimens, and intermetallic phase identified using Akashi MVK-H1. The thickness of the intermetallic layer was measured using image analyzer.
The Microstructure of the PTA weld overlay specimens are consists of dendritic Fe solid solution matrix and eutectic carbide phase. PTA B shows precipitates of Ti0.5W0.5C carbide, which remained undiluted during fusion welding. The Ti is mostly detected inside the particle (black), whereas W is mainly detected outside (gray), indicating that the interior is mainly composed of TiC and the exterior is mostly composed of WC.
Microstructure of cast specimen consist of complex microstructure, generally the microstructures have 3 distinct phases which are matrix, eutectic carbide and primary carbide. Increasing tungsten (W) chemical content will promote the formation of primary tungsten carbide as occur in cast 1 specimen. Generally the hardness will increase with increasing carbide volume fraction.
The Iron base superalloy reacts with Al progressively rather than with Zn. The intermetallic layer thickness formation is following parabolic rate law indicating the solid diffusion process. On the iron base alloy The intermetallic layer formed was base on iron aluminide Fe2Al5 intermetallic layer. On the Cobalt base alloy the phase was CoAl. Conventional Stellite alloy has intermetallic growth rate more than 1.5 times faster than cast iron base alloy. The stages of intermetallic phase formation on Fe base alloy are ; Initially Si Rich layer formed followed by Fe diffusion to the layer, final stages is continuous h- Fe2Al5 (678 HV) and Zn diffusion path formation.
