Monitoring of soil contamination becomes an important issue for effective remediation of soil and groundwater. Recently, time domain reflectometry (TDR) has emerged as a promising tool for monitoring soils contaminated with inorganic chemicals since concentration of these chemicals can significantly contribute to the conductance of a porous medium. In chapter 1, a detecting possibility of two inorganic chemicals in a sandy soil using TDR was investigated by conducting a number of batch experiments on TDR-measured electrical property (resistance) for various probe lengths (L = 10, 15, 25 cm) and saturation degrees (Se = 0.1 - 1.0). Column experiment was also performed to investigate the extent of input concentration, which allows the detection of sodium nitrate by 10 cm probe for various travel distances under saturated flow condition. The results of batch experiments showed that the inverse of TDR-measured resistance was sensitive to both probe length and saturation degree. The short probe (L = 10 cm) could not detect the electrical property in low concentration range (0 ~ 0.5 g/L) properly. This phenomenon was more pronounced for zinc sulfate than sodium nitrate (NaNO3 : < 0.05 g/L, ZnSO4: < 0.1 g/L). Saturation degree also affected significantly the measurement of electrical property, especially for the short probe when low saturation degree (Se 0.5) and input concentration higher that 2000 mg/L in the sandy soil.
In chapter 2, the two-dimensional plume tests in a laboratory-scale sandy aquifer model using TDR method was conducted to understand which sorption processes (reversible / irreversible) govern the zinc sulfate transport by estimating the retardation factor based on the movement of zinc sulfate plume. It was revealed that the observed zinc sulfate plumes showed no retardation relative to sodium nitrate plumes with a retardation factor ranging from 0.98 to 0.97 and that a prominent reduction of zinc sulfate mass occurred during transport through the aquifer. It is concluded from retardation factor and mass recovery that the irreversible sorption governs the transport of zinc sulfate in the sandy aquifer model.
