In this study, natural manganese ores (NMO) are used to remove H₂S from mixed gases which simulate coal gases in the IGCC (Integragted coal gasification combined cycle) process and NOx from mixed gases including SO₂. Sorbents using NMO as a main material show the superior performance in the fixed bed reactor at medium temperature of 550 ℃, which is a research trend of sorbents for IGCC process. It shows the similar result in comparison with sorbents based on zinc in reaction rate aspect. Sorbents are analyzed to verify performance in the fixed bed reactor and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The properties after reaction are measured and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller adsorption method (BET), inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The initial reaction rate constant and activation energy are calculated by Arrhenius relation through data acquired by TGA from 400 to 800℃ . As a calculated result, k_o is 1.4333 cm⁴/mmol-min and E_A is 7,316.134 cal/mmol. From these results, the effective diffusivity is calculated as a temperature function based on the unreacted core model and the relation with temperature is as follows; ln D_e [cm²/s] =-2788.76/T+7.87. Breakthrough time and performance of sorbents in the fixed bed reactor are simulated from the result of the initial reaction rate, the effective diffusivity and activation energy, and they fit into the experimental results. The bigger factor, which influences breakthrough time, is the effective diffusivity of the two variables, the reaction rate constant and the effective diffusivity. The reaction between sorbents and H²S is controlled by the ash product layer diffusion. The initial chemical phase reacting with H²S is Mn₂O₃ and it changes into MnO in the reduction atmosphere. Though sorbents after desulfurization is tried to regenerate at medium temperature, its capacity is deactivated by sulfate reaction, which is superior to regeneration reaction at medium temperature. Several promoters such as NiO, Co₃O₄ and CuO are mixed respectively to improve a regeneration problem, but it is not improved. To improve this problem, ammonia and steam are added in the regeneration mixed gases and then regeneration occurs excellently. XRD analysis for effluents confirms that the peak of effluents is (NH₄)₂SO₄ and regeneration reaction occurs smoothly by expected reaction route. 20 cycle tests are executed in the fixed bed reactor to confirm regeneration capacity of sorbents and capacity of sorbents is kept average 8 g S per 100 g sorbents. NMO is used to remove NOx from mixed gases including SO₂ as a catalyst, too. Previous researcher reported that metal oxide form of NMO is a superior SCR catalyst at low temperature below 200℃, but NMO loses capacity of catalyst little by little if there is SO₂ in the mixed gases. In this study, mixed gases including SO₂ are used purposely to solve that problem. If sulfated NMO can remove NOx from mixed gases including SO₂, it has a chemical resistance against SO₂. Aiming in this point, NMO is pretreated with SO₂ before the SCR reaction. The optimum temperature range of sulfated NMO during SCR is from 300 to 350℃, but the equilibrium SCR conversion is no more than 58%. In spite of injecting high concentration of NO, SCR conversion of sulfated NMO has a similar value of 58%. However, as injected amount of NO concentration decreases, SCR conversion decreases. Batch reaction is executed to verify this phenomena as follows. The concentration of NO varies in the range of 100, 200, 400, 1000, 2000 and 5000 ppm and it is injected in the fixed bed batch reactor for one minutes. As a result after 100 minutes, all cases reached in equilibrium with the concentration of NO from 190 ppm. This results can be caused by difference of SCR mechanism between sulfated NMO and metal oxide. Temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are used to verity this mechanism. Active site of sulfated NMO does not have Bronsted acid site but Lewis acid site. Promoters such as CeO₂, CuO, MoO₃, WO₃ and ZrO₂ are added to break down equilibrium point of NO conversion, but there are seldom the adding effects. V₂O_5-WO₃-MoO₃/TiO₂is used to improve it as another trial because of same reaction temperature zone with sulfated NMO. The method of mixing with V₂O_5-WO₃-MoO₃/TiO₂ is tried by two methods ; physically mixing and two stage arrangement. All of two methods show economical advantage and good conversion of NO in case of use by ratio of 7 to 3 (sulfated NMO : V₂O_5-WO₃-MoO₃/TiO₂=7:3). Especially two stage arrangement method shows more excellent efficiency of removing NOx than physical mixing method.
