(The) Effects of Older Mothers' Parental Role Satisfaction and Parenting Stress on Children's Social Competence원문보기

This study aims to specifically examine how parental role satisfaction and parenting stress felt and experienced by mothers of 35 years or older affects children's social competence according to everyday environment and parenting behavior since the number of older mothers continues to increase steadily. The research was conducted with 230 mothers whose child was 3 to 5 years old and was at a nursery or a kindergarten in Seoul or Gyeonggi Province and who gave birth to the child at the age of 35 or older and 230 children.
The Parental Role Satisfaction Scale developed by Hyeon and Cho (1994) was used to measure mothers' role satisfaction, and Ahn's (2001) translation and revision of questions in Parenting Daily Hassles made by Crnic and Greenberg (1990) was used to measure mothers' parenting stress. Park's (1997) scale, which was the revision of the Iowa Social Competency Scale (ISCS) in Preschool Form developed by Pease, Clark, and Crase (1979), was used to measure children's social competence. The collected data went through frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Duncan post-test, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis using an SPSSWIN 17.0 program.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows:
First, among demographic factors for older mothers, age was the variable that showed significant differences in parental role satisfaction and parenting stress. Among sub-factors of parental role satisfaction, there were statistically significant differences in parent-child relations and parental role conflict; the oldest group of 47 years or older showed the highest parental role satisfaction but showed the lowest conflict for parental role. Groups of 41 to 43 years and 44 to 46 years showed relatively higher parenting stress than other groups, while the group of 47 years or older showed the lowest parenting stress, showing statistically significant differences between groups.
Second, when differences in children's social competence between groups were examined, with the ranges of scores for parental role satisfaction and parenting stress divided into top, middle, and bottom, there was generally no great difference in children's social competence by parental role satisfaction, showing no statistically significant difference. However, there were differences between groups by the degree of parenting stress in terms of the sensitivity factor of children's social competence. That is, the higher parenting stress a group has, the higher social sensitivity children show.
Third, as for parental role satisfaction, the higher satisfaction with support by the spouse and children, the higher social leadership children had; the lower satisfaction with support by children, the higher social instability children showed. The higher parenting stress older mothers suffered from, the higher social sensitivity children showed. As for parental role satisfaction, the higher satisfaction with support by the spouse and children and the lower parenting stress, the greater social competence children generally got.
