The intermolecular hydrophobic interaction between nonpolar hydrocarbons and water plays a key role for many biophysical phenomena of DNA, protein, biological membrane and drug design. The benzene-water, C6H6-H2O has been well known that π electrons on a conjugated system can accept hydrogen to form a weak hydrogen bond, that is, so called π-hydrogen bond. The benzene-water cation complex, [C6H6-(H2O)n+] is mainly bound by charge-dipole bond. The global minimum structures of the [C6H6-(H2O)n+] (n=1-5) have been investigated using ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) with large basis sets. The highest levels of theory employed in this study are B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ for geometry optimization and MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ for binding energy. The harmonic vibrational frequencies and IR intensities are also determined at the B3LYP/ aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory to confirm whether the structure of water complexes is affected by the presence of benzene. The effect of benzene on the OH stretching modes of [C6H6-(H2O)n+] is observed in the chare-dipole bonded OH stretch and frequency shifts from (H2O)n to [C6H6-(H2O)n+] are in the range fo 20-30cm-1. The binding energies of [C6H6-(H2O)n+] structure are predicted to be 8.8 kcal/mol at the B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory.
