In recent days, children have a strong tendency to be individualistic and egocentric due to urbanization, a low birth rate, the spread of nuclear families and excessive competition for college admission, and there are increasing psychological and emotional problems with today's children. Art education that aims at awakening human sensitivity and emotional cleansing is expected to make some contribution to the settlement of those problems, and color therapy that could be utilized in art class was consequently examined in this study. As color therapy is good even for people who find it burdensome to make something, that can be more effective than general art therapy. Although color therapy is efficient enough to step up the emotional cultivation and self-development of people in general, the application of color therapy is just confined to people with particular disabilities. Now it's time to make use of color therapy in school education for the purposes of treatment and prevention. The purpose of this study was to apply color therapy to elementary art instruction, to facilitate children's stress removal and psychological treatment, and ultimately to explore the therapeutic and preventive effects of color therapy. The concept and necessity of color therapy were discussed to lay the theoretical foundation for the application of color therapy to school education, and the healing mechanism of colors was checked to find out how colors could heal the body and mind. And the psychological impact and therapeutic significance of colors, the color therapy technique and actual cases of using it were investigated to design a color therapy program geared toward children. The subjects in this study were every student in a sixth-grade class in Wonhyo Elementary School in Seoul, who numbered 28 and involved 51 boys and 13 girls. Out of the children, intensive counseling was provided to three children who had psychological problems to boost the effect of treatment. What the other ordinary children without any particular psychological problems drew during the program was utilized as their counseling data, and their pictures were compared to the three children's pictures who needed treatment. The experiment was implemented in 11 sessions from March 17 to June 2, 2010, once a week, 50 minutes each, in four different stages: preparation stage(1st-3rd sessions), initial stage(4th-6th sessions), interim stage(7th-9th sessions) and late stage(10th-11th sessions). To assess the outcome of color therapy, the children's pictures were analyzed to check the characteristics and changes of color expressions to prescribe the best treatment color for each of the children. And then what to do after the program was advised, and distinctive cases that were found in daily routine life before and after the application of color therapy were presented. The findings of the study were as follows: When color-based psychological therapy was provided to the children, the intensity of their problem behaviors got weaken, and there was a marked decrease in the frequency of problem behaviors. The color therapy enabled them to develop their own self, to express themselves through art, to have a better understanding of themselves, to have a deeper insight into themselves and to foster their emotion and values in a sound manner. Thus, the color therapy produced good therapeutic effects. When the color therapy was provided to the children without any emotional or behavioral problems, they had a good chance to express their own conflicts and sentiment by drawing a picture and to seek sound solutions. That experience was expected to help them to attain a sound physical, emotional and social growth and to prevent the occurrence of any additional problems. The findings of the study suggested that the color therapy had a very good effect on the children's psychological treatment. To ensure the successful application of color therapy in school, it will be more effective for therapists to experience the superb effects of the color therapy themselves. If a wide variety of color therapy programs tailored to different graders are implemented in school, it will produce better treatment results.
