The worldwide efforts for conserving energy and reducing CO2 emissions are being made by the lead of each governments. And among them, the effort for high efficiency of induction motor that accounts for large parts of the power consumption, is actively being carried out together with the policy regulations at home and abroad. While the high efficiency induction motor requires an introduction of high efficient materials in reaching target efficiency through methods such as optimum design or the usage of high efficient materials, considered the territory of manufacturers, the enhancement of measuring technology for determining whether motors produced according to a precise efficiency and loss estimating process for completed motors reaches a target efficiency value or not, also has a very important technical meaning. To determine the efficiency and loss of motors, a theoretical definition for the loss is required first. Generally, the losses of motor are largely classified as load loss and no-load loss. Load losses are in turn divided into primary and secondary copper loss, and stray load loss and no-load losses are divided into iron loss and mechanical loss. There are various losses and efficiency determining methods depending on which measuring combination estimates each of the losses. Currently, for estimating the loss of induction motors all over the world, there are loss measuring and efficiency estimating techniques such as the IEC Standard 60034-2 specification and the IEEE Standard 112B in the U.S., the CSA C390 specification in Canada, the Eh-star circuit method proposed by Germany, and so on. In this study, it first theoretically discussed each loss components of the induction motor, and mentioned the methods for estimating these losses and efficiency. Then, it is the purpose of this study to propose the basis for precisely determining the losses by experimently verifying the efficiency and loss measuring method of the IEC Standard 60034-2 specification, the most trusted and much used among the specifications, and providing suitability of this method and details to be compensated through the test results.
