This study aims to examine what characteristics caregivers perceive as the ones of a good teacher according to the ages of children on the basis of their field experiences.
For this purpose, research question was set up as follows: what characteristics do caregivers perceive as the ones of a "good teacher" according to the ages of children?
This research was conducted through a couple of in-depth interviews with each of 11 caregivers from Feb, 20 to April, 24 in 2010. They had different years of field experience and had worked for discrete child care centers scattered across the country; five of them with 3 to 11 years of experience working in private daycare or child care centers at workplace located in Seoul and the metropolitan area, Gyounggi province; another five of them with 5.5 to 8 years of experience working in private daycare center in Jeonbook province; one with 7 years of experience in Choongnam province. With the consent of the interviewees, each interview was recorded and transcribed. The analysis of data, including the transcriptions, daily plans and reflections, and observation records, and journals written by the caregivers, revealed the categories of which the caregivers thought of as the characteristics of a good teacher.
The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, the interviewees had slightly different views on the personal traits of a good teacher by the age of children they had mainly taken charge of. The caregivers taking care of 0 year-old mentioned ‘loving a baby like her mom', 'being physically and emotionally sound', 'putting themselves in the shoes of parents', and 'encouraging a new attempt' as personalities of a good teacher; in sum, love, support, understanding, and health were recognized. Regarding the ones for 1 year old, they pointed out traits such as 'being generous and understanding', 'being pleasant and positive all the time', and 'building up trust with parents'; that is, they thought of understanding, generosity, joviality, and trustworthiness as important personalities to become a good teacher. Concerning the ones in charge of 2 year-olds, 'being patient', 'being soft-spoken', 'modeling active attitudes', 'wearing comfortable clothes for unrestricted movement', and 'establishing a stable relationship with parents' were stated; to sum up, they mentioned patience, ways of speaking, activeness, casual clothing, and personal relationships. The caregivers for 3 year-olds showed their perception to regard positivity, personal relationships, and responsibility as significant features by stating 'smiling and trying to find interests all the time’, ‘building a positive relationship with a supervisor’, and ‘being responsible’. Next, the ones taking care of 4 year-olds pointed out positivity (‘having a positive mind’) and personal relationships (‘collaborating with colleagues’) as consequential personal traits to be qualified as a good teacher. Finally, the caregivers in charge of 5 year-olds talked about ‘being open-minded’ and ‘getting dressed professionally’ when asked for their opinions the question. In short, regardless of the ages of children the interviewees had taken care of, they pointed out personalities related to providing love and support to young children in common while exposing dissimilarities in perceptions on the significance of some traits such as a caregiver’s clothing, health, and personal relationships by the ages of their children.
Second, in terms of professional characteristics of a good teacher, the interviewees had different ideas by the ages of children. The caregivers of 0 year-old stated ‘having fundamental knowledge and skills of nurturing’, ‘managing an infant’s health and security’, ‘supporting an infant’s physical movements and exploration in accordance with her age’, ‘keeping up with an infant’s development by observation’, and ‘constantly communicating with parents about the development of their child.’ In sum, in case of the caregivers for 0 year old, caring, managing security and health, supporting physical movements and exploration, observing, and communicating were recognized as important professional features. As far as the interviewees of 1 year-old are concerned, ‘constantly communicating with infants’, ‘sensitively responding to an infant’s needs through observation’, and ‘knowledgability of infant nurturing’ were mentioned, which can be summed up into the following three characteristics: communication, sensitivity, and knowledgability. Regarding the ones in charge of 2 year-olds, ‘guiding to develop good living habits’, ‘supporting an infant’s emotional stability’ ‘consulting parents with their infant’s development’, and ‘being equipped with professional knowledge on the developmental stages’ were pointed out. In short, they perceived guiding habit formation, supporting emotional stability, consulting, and having professional knowledge as the most important. Next, the caregivers for 3 year olds stated ‘modeling’, ‘frequently exchanging linguistic interaction with children’, and ‘cultivating independence.’ In terms of the ones in charge of 4 year-olds, ‘developing young children’s social skills’, ‘performing various types of activities and being flexible’, ‘meeting young children’s intellectual needs’, and ‘being conscious of a caregiver’s role’ were mentioned. Last, the caregivers taking charge of 5 year-olds pointed out ‘planning and managing class effectively’, ‘developing young children’s creativity and cognitive ability’, ‘preparing children for primary school’, ‘consulting parents about their child’s preparation for primary school,’ ‘providing sex education in linkage with safety education’, ‘reflecting on their practices’, and ‘having a firm view on care and education.’ To summarize, the interviewees revealed different perceptions on professional characteristics caregivers should possess to become a good teacher for differential children in terms of ages and developmental stages. They thought that for them to be qualified as a good teacher, they should be able to meet the needs of young children as well as their parents based on relevant knowledge on young children’s development.
In conclusion, the meaning of this study can be found in that it made another contribution to efforts of the relevant academia to better understand caregivers' faith in care and education and their practices by listening to their voices reflecting the reality, which ultimately leads to better practices of the field.
