This study analyzes the pattern of reporting on the Taean oil spill in 2007 by general-interest newspapers and business newspapers based on the articles published in the 25 months since the accident. The hypothesis in this study is that general-interest newspapers, which put more weight on social issues, and business newspapers, which focuses on economic and business phenomenons, will have different approaches in reporting a major disaster, namely the Taean oil spill. The result of the analysis shows that general-interest newspapers, on average, had more frequent and larger reports on the accident than business newspapers. This indicates that general-interest newspapers still exert greater influence in dealing with large-scale disasters and other social issues despite the increased status of business newspapers and intensifying competition between the two types of newspapers. In addition, the frame analysis carried out based on Iyengar's differentiation of episodic frame and thematic frame demonstrates that there was little difference in the usage of the two frames between general-interest newspapers and business newspapers. It was found that in both types of newspapers, the share of episodic frame was larger in the beginning but the share of thematic frame grew with time. In other words, general-interest newspapers and business newspapers used same the same description method. This study also looks at whether the international custom of naming an oil spill after the name of the vessel involved was applied in the Taean oil spill, and it was found that more than 90 percent of the newspaper articles on the spill used the name of the place where the accident occurred, "Taean", to refer to the accident. In particular, 4.9 percent of the articles in general-interest newspapers cited the name of the vessel and company involved while the share was only 1.4 percent for business newspapers. This can be interpreted as business newspapers' attempt to minimize their articles' impact on the relevant industry.
