Abstract A Romantic point of view remains compelling insofar as it is concerned with critically approaching to the Western modern originating from the Enlightenment, and with an apostle of counter-modernity in art, attempting to emancipate imagination and sensibility from the fetters of reason. The attitude of those Romanticists who view the world through their incessant introspection and self-reflection in the age of ‘drifting away endlessly by the storm of progress’, as Benjamin said, is still in effect. In that respect, Romanticism may be a crucial theme running through the age rather than the merely past history. Classicism and Romanticism coexist in the early 19th century, but the latter lays claim to its key ideological movement, becoming more mature along with the remaining revolutionary spirit of the society. In case of Germany, Romanticism developed along the aspiration of intellectuals (including artists) to find their own way of thinking and culture in order to escape from the political turmoils and the situation in which their dreams of social change through politics failed to come true. Those intellectuals who couldn't have influence on the contemporary politics that directly affects social change came to find their escape in art, dreaming the other side of reality and thereby showing melancholic characteristics. The German Romanticism that reflects such melancholic sentiment involved the negative aspects of the frustration and escapism of individuals deriving from the gap between ideal and reality but couldn't fail to catch the positive energy found in that process. In other words, the sense of critiquing reality inherent in the melancholic vision accompanied its self-consciousness of perceiving its limits in the flip side of reality. Although Romanticists’ ideals were unrealistic, such unreality might have been a motive for critiquing the real world. Escapism can be read as such a critical attitude that resists conforming to reality. This thesis begins with a discussion of the point that the art of painting as a creative arena in which German intellectuals excluded from political activity had no choice but to engage contains melancholic elements. German Romantic paintings, while taking over such pictorial features of Northern European landscape as bucolic and lyric, are characterized as speculative and transcendent since they are representative of ‘landscape reflecting spirit’ in combination with the German natural philosophy and mysticism. Specifically, they are showing contemplative, mystic, bucolic, fantastic, lyric, solitary, gloomy sentiments. This thesis examines the concept of melancholy taken as comprising the features of pictures containing these sentiments as well as the feelings or dispositions of the artists producing such sentiments. Melancholy, deriving from the ancient pathology, takes on its positive meaning as it is recognized as the source of artistic creativity until the Renaissance. Melancholy, changing itself endlessly through impersonations exhibiting abstract concepts concretely, presents itself as a ‘sentiment’, in our contemporary sense, in the feeling-projected-landscapes since the Renaissance. The most characteristic of melancholy as sentiment lies in its invocation of deep speculation. The key of melancholy lies in its deep speculation or meditation on its object rather than in its instantaneous response to an object. Namely, it is all the more important when a landscape becomes an object of contemplation in relation to one's internal world rather than it becomes an object of ugly or beauty. That melancholy involves a deep thinking relates to its unique solitary and meditative pose shown in its impersonation. For German Romanticists, melancholy manifests itself in the artworks as a mental wandering of the modern subject, and as an image of the attitude toward finding an object of longing incessantly while reflecting on the existence and life of humanity in nature outside of the unsatisfactory real world. The image of the solitary figures speculating in the midst of infinite nature, as often found in the German Romantic paintings, is indeed a representative motif of melancholy. A solitary and deeply introspecting man in the Romantic paintings, the manner in which man contemplates nature as the backdrop of his introspection, and the manner in which man, albeit existing in reality, longs for what is beyond reality, function as melancholic elements. Romantic artists used to depict desolate ruins, spacious land, foggy cemetery, river in the sunset, vast oceans, etc. The answer to the question why these sites evoked melancholy, above all, lies in the fact that they are motifs whereby to make humanity realize its finitude. Melancholy, as already noted, is invoked in the moment of solitary speculation and introspection. Solitariness forms the backdrop of melancholy and becomes an indispensable element for melancholy. In addition, these sites, as they prepare for such solitariness, become ones for meditation and introspection. In this respect, solitariness and introspection, nature as a site for introspection, and a longing for infinite nature are closely interrelated. In other words, Romanticists realize the finitude of humanity in such nature and at the same time lead the finite self to move toward the infinite through the infinite nature. Since they recognize oppositions between ideal and reality, between the finite and the infinite, their Romantic longing for the ideal could not help exposing their dual dispositions, and attempted to go beyond the limit of reality and the finite self by giving an infinite semblance to the artist's imagination, i.e., the finite. Consequently, the melancholy of German Romanticists may be said to be a composite sentiment that derives from the unreachable ideal and the unsatisfactory reality. Romanticists set up two oppositional concepts between life and death, present and past, reality and dream (fantasy), finitude and infinitude, humanity and nature, reality and ideal, etc., and strive to march in the opposite direction of the complete ideal of Classicism by constantly synthesizing those contradictory oppositions. Thus, the German Romantic melancholy, featuring as escapist, is concerned with exploring the higher spiritual domain and intellectual world through meditation and introspection in nature, and, as Aristotle indicates, functions as an important creative motif.
