ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to examine the effects of gateball, a sport enjoyed by many elders, on female elders?f health fitness. For this purpose, we sampled 20 women aged over 65 and with BMI of over 25 living in J City and obtained their consent with giving information on the objective and procedure of the study. Before the program was applied, we measured the subjects?f health fitness in terms of flexibility, muscle strength, muscular endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance, and %body fat. The exercise group participated in the exercise program for 12 weeks, 3 times a week, and 80 minutes each time (10 minutes?f warming?]up, 60 minutes?f main exercise, and 10 minutes?f cooling?]down). The control group maintained their usual daily life. Another measurement was made after 12 weeks, and collected data were analyzed according to the purpose of this study using SPSS 13.0. Conclusions drawn from this study are as follows. %body fat decreased significantly after 12 weeks in the exercise group, but increased slightly, though not significantly, in the control group. Cardiorespiratory endurance increased after 12 weeks in the exercise group, but decreased in the control group, and the difference in the change between the groups was significant. Muscular endurance increased after 12 weeks in the exercise group, but was changed little in the control group. However, the changes were not significant. Flexibility increased after 12 weeks in both the exercise group and the control group. However, the changes were not significant. Muscle strength decreased slightly after 12 weeks in both the exercise group and the control group. However, the changes were not significant. According to the results of this study, 12 weeks?f participation in gateball had a positive effect on the decrease of %body fat and the increase of cardiorespiratory endurance in overweight female elders, but its effect on muscle strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility was not significant. Therefore, in enhancing overweight female elders?f health fitness, it is considered effective to have stretching and resistance exercise together with participation in gateball.
