This study was performed to identify the change in the membranes chemical resistance characteristics in a generic precision filtering membrane and an ultrafiltration hollow-fiber membrane according to elapsed time. Membranes used for water processing are cleaned periodically according to constant intervals, with the mainly used detergent chemical being sodium hypochlorite. In this experiment, the change in the membranes durability after 1, 3, 5, and 10 days exposed to sodium hypochlorite with 0.5% effective chlorine concentration, and HCL 1.0 % as the acidity condition, pH 4 and NaOH 4.0 %, pH 10 as the alkaline condition, were checked in terms of change in tensile strength and expansion ratio at breakage. In addition, the change in chemical resistance according to temperature change (5℃, 25℃, 50℃) was also examined. The material change characteristics were examined by immersion the separation membrane at 50℃, which is higher than the normal cleaning temperature of separation membranes, and then verifying the change in permeability and material after 10 days. The experiment results showed that for the tensile strength results at 5℃, 25℃, and 50℃, the tensile strength of both generic membrane and hollow-fiber (PVDF) membrane dropped by more than 50% under 4% NaOH. The separation membrane materials PPS, CPVC, and PVDF used in the experiment showed property changes under NaOH. The hollow-fiber membrane made of PE material showed a slight decrease in tensile strength at 5℃ and 25℃; however, under 0.5% NaClO at 50℃, the tensile strength reduced greatly. The expansion rate at the breakage of the generic membrane (CPVC) fell by less than the tensile strength at 5℃, 25℃, and 50℃; generic membrane (CPVC) and hollow-fiber membrane showed similar tendencies in the tensile strength test. Permeate flux after chemical treatment test on generic PPS membranes showed that the permeate flow speed greatly increased from 100 L/m2ㆍh to 300 L/m2ㆍh at 4.0 % NaOH conditions ; we estimate that this is the result of strong alkali ions opening the membranes pores. In addition, the permeate rate at 1.0 % HCL and pH 10 was observed to be 200 L/m2ㆍh, twice that of the separation membrane before immersion. The generic membrane (CPVC) reached a permeation flow speed near 170 L/m2ㆍh if not immersion in solution. During the permeate flux after chemical treatment ratio test, the permeation flow rate was about 240 L/m2ㆍh at 4.0 % NaOH and 1.0 bar condition, and thus, increased over an membrane; however, under other chemicals and the standard solution, permeation speed was reduced in all cases relative to the membrane. In the hollow fiber membrane (PVDF), the permeation flow rate prior to pre-processing was 500 L/m2ㆍh ; however, at 4.0% NaOH, a very high permeation flow rate of 9,000 L/m2ㆍh was measured. The PVDF membrane was very weak to NaOH, but exhibited stable permeation characteristics under other chemicals such as NaOCl. The Permeate flux after chemical treatment ratio test was performed on the PE membrane under all temperature conditions. In alkali conditions, the permeation ratio increased with temperature rises ; in acidic conditions, the opposite was found. In basic conditions, the permeation ratio reduced with an increase in temperature, in particular, large differences were observed at 50℃. Measurement of the chemical resistance of generic and hollow-fiber membranes using TGA showed that all separation membranes deteriorated under NaOH conditions, resulting in a reduced decomposition temperature.
