Most school-age children solve a given problem in a process of understanding the intention of their counterparts and expressing through language. However, it seems that children with language delay have many difficulties not only understanding what their counterparts ask but also conveying what they understand to their counterparts in a logical form of language, which may result in trouble with problem solving. Therefore, it is needed to deal with language problem solving abilities of children with language delay. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effect of language intervention program using story books on language problem solving abilities for school-age children with language delay. Three school-age children with language delay participated in the study. They showed mildly low intelligence level (IQ 65∼85) without any visual, hearing, and physical problems. Language intervention program was set twice a week with total 18 sessions and each session was done by 40 minutes. In each session subjects were asked. A few types of questions related to a content of a story book, such as cause and effect, reasoning for solving, and guessing clues after listening a story book. Each session consists of 5 steps; 1st step is for comprehension after listening, 2nd step is for understanding factual information, 3rd step is for solving various questions, 4th step is for guessing emotion, and final step is for summarizing. The followings are the results of the study ; 1. Language problem solving ability was improved by language intervention program using story books in children with language delay. 2. Comprehensive ability of cause and effect in each situation was improved by language intervention program using story books in children with language delay. 3. Reasoning ability to find some clues or reference words in each situation was improved by language intervention program using story books in children with language delay. 4. Reasoning ability about what the future situation was improved by language intervention program using story books in children with language delay. 5. Language intervention program using story books significantly affected the qualitative changes in comprehension and speaking ability of children with language delay. From all these results, it can be said that language intervention program using story books may affect language problem solving ability of language delayed school-age children.
