This work aims to develop novel different stimuli-responsive shape memory materials based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and conducting polymers. Two approaches of CNT functionalization and core-shell conducting nanofiber formation are dedicated to enhance performance of shape memory properties of polyurethane block copolymer (SMPU). Specially, CNT functionalization focuses on Cu(I)-catalyzed Huisgen [3+2] dipolar cycloaddition click chemistry and hyperbranched polymer-aided CNT functionalization. SMPU-functionalized single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) nanocomposites were synthesized using click chemistry. The nanocomposites showed excellent SWNT dispersion in the polyurethane matrix with good electro-active and thermo-responsive shape memory properties due to the effective covalent bonding between SWNT and SMPU. More than 90% of shape recovery and shape retention was observed for the nanocomposites containing 4 wt% functionalized SWNTs. Clicked core/shell nanowires were also synthesized by covalent functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with polypyrrole (PPy). Interestingly, core/shell nanowire showed outstanding gas sensing behavior compared to pure PPy, pristine MWNTs, and MWNT/PPy hybrids prepared via in-situ polymerization. A novel non-covalent CNT functionalization concept was purposed to prepare the thermo- and electro-active shape memory nanocomposites by in-situ polymerization of hyperbranched polyurethane (HBPU) in the presence of MWNTs. The MWNT/HBPU nanocomposites showed excellent dispersion of MWNTs, which is useful to improve the thermo- and electro-active shape recovery properties of nanocomposites. Water-triggered shape memory CNT nanocomposites could be also achieved using poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as hydrophilic component in the hyperbranched polyurethane. The MWNT/HBPU nanocomposites represented a shape recovery behavior in water at room temperature, which originates from the melting of PEO crystals. Due to the synergistic effect of thermo-mechanical and water-triggered shape memory properties, the fast shape recovery in water at high temperature was obtained. The conducting core-shell shape memory nanofibers were obtained by vapor phase polymerization of conducting polymers as well as co-electrospinning using SMPU as the core. The core-shell SMPU nanofibers gave faster shape memory response than the SMPU film due to effects of nanofiber morphology and nanometer sized nanofibers. In the co-electrospinning, MWNT/SMPU composites were used as a shell part material, whereas PPy and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) were formed in the shell part by the vapor phase polymerization. A perfect smooth surface morphology was observed for the P3HT coated nanofibers compared to PPy nanofibers, which is useful for reaching higher conductivity for the P3HT nanofiber webs, and useful to achieve good electro-active shape memory properties. In consequence, the stimuli-responsive shape memory polymer nanocomposites based on CNTs and conducting polymers are sensitive to the environmental stimuli, such as temperature, electrical, pH, gas, etc. The stimuli-responsive shape memory materials open the new window for preparing the actuators, conducting textiles, biosensors, bioprobes, etc.
