ABSTRACT The Christian Spirit in Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre LEE, GYE-SUN Department of English Graduate School Soongsil University The Christianity was the biggest issue amongst the Victorian people. A collection of sermons and autobiographies had been published continuously and the Victorian people argued constantly with one another in bitter disputes over Christian issues whenever they had the occasion. In “Jane Eyre”, Charlotte Brontë criticized strongly against the conservative Christian and hoped that the institutionalized Christian religions would pass out of the world and that the true church would be arrive. This novel is Bildungsroman, which describes, through the first person narration of Jane Eyre, growing up as an independent woman and recovering her social status and having a happy marriage after her suffering as a desolate orphan during her childhood. Her infancy in Gateshead, Thornfield, and the Moor house becomes the launching step of her life's spiritual journey and Jane Eyre develops her spiritual ego in connection with religion in each step of her spiritual journey. The Christian inspiration from Helen Burns, a classmate, when she was in the Lowood institution and the conviction of belief she gained from St. John whom she met in the Moor house operate as the pillars of her faith which brighten her life in this novel. Charlotte Brontë expressed the precept of patience, charity, mercy fidelity, and sacrifice within Christianity, and gave an expression to the great model of an apostolic martyrdom as a missionary through Helen and St. John. And she challenged through Broklehurst against the older generation's Christian religion which was fixed by the formalistic and institutionalized doctrines of the Victorian era. Finally, her self-sacrifice of the Christian love for the blind Rochester is the crystallization of Jane Eyre's spiritual journey, and it becomes the finest one of this novel. A course of maturity of their faith that Jane and Rochester who had not had a religious identity yet and may be heretic in other perspectives is depicted frankly reflects Charlotte Brontë's spirit as an author who pursued truth and integrity in literature and her life. In this thesis, I specifically tried to make a careful study of Jane Eyre's Christian spirit and the aspects of Christianity in Jane Eyre.
